<b>December 2008 Mythology Feature!

*Azrael-Nekhbet:iconAzrael-Nekhbet: reports, December 24, 2008
Hello, this is my first news submission, and I thought that it would be rather interesting to feature some creatures of myths from around the world. Some you may recognize like the Unicorn and Phoenix, and others are simply fascinating and bizarre, but all the more interesting like the Stymphalian birds. Every artist has their own unique twists on these beasts, take a look!:)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mythology is fascinating in that it was and still is the explanation of existence and the best answer to "Why?". Every religion has it's own creation story, and somewhere in those stories are fantastic beasts bearing innumerable sorts of symbolic traits. The Phoenix is associated with the Sun, in both appearance and the cycle of Rebirth and Immortality, as is Fire. The Ouroboros, another symbol of Immortality, is a serpent in the shape of a circle forever consuming it's own tail. The Circle itself bears the symbol of Heaven and constant cycle. Perhaps most know of the anime Fullmetal Alchemist, in which this Ouroboros is present on beings known as homunculi. Within their Ouroboros marking lies a Star of David, in which each point represents a specific metal and the Planet associated with it, as well as the four basic elements and their complementary humours. For example, Fire would be the upper point of the Star, while Water would be the lower. The Star itself is linked to Alchemy and Transmutation of the Imperfect.
In this aspect overall, these fantastic beasts and their representative symbols could be used to represent human frailty and desire.

One final interesting note on Mythology are the overall appearances of the beasts, where in some cases may have been the products of self induced hallucinations, the absurd compilations of the human mind. Take the Manticore, whose origins lie in Indian mythology. The beast, according to travelers and foreigners, was said to have the body of blazing cinnamon red tiger with the face of a man bearing 3 rows of angular razor sharp teeth in which it would ravenously consume unwary men. It's tail was said to have been either a scorpion's tail or a club of numerous stinging quills, as was it's mane.
Another man-eating beast, though little known, is the Perytons. This creature, according to Roman Mythology, was said to be part stag, part bird, and bore razor sharp fangs. It was peculiar in the sense that it could only eat one human in it's life time, and this was supposedly noted in individuals that caste their proper shadows. Those Perytons that caste a human shadow were the ones to be feared.

Overall, Mythology is a unique and infinite source of inspiration for possibly the most important aspect of Human Culture, the Arts.

man, some of those pics are sick. especially the dragon done in microns in the middle of the list. thanks for the news and i appreciated reading it. the chimerae-esque beats u speak of arent neccesarrily hallucinations but instead represent a mixture of ideas/ideals/teachings. the manticore is the devouring beast that is mans passions unleashed and unfettered. a lot of the alchemical stuff u relate to is pretty much on point. i would've liked to see some kaballah stuff in here cause alchemy as a science basically develpoped from the tree of life, but oh well!
