Petition To Get More Protection For Your Work

^l8:iconl8: reports, December 27, 2008
We have started a petition regarding the increase in art theft from our accounts on DeviantART :angered:, the use of said art on DeviantART without permission :angered:, the illegal sale of said art also on DeviantART :angered: and the minimal or very slow action by the Administration/Staff to act upon those members is not acceptable to us and we want change.

Never mind all the new bells and whistles being added (as good as they are), lets get the basic artist rights to the maximum protection for their work sorted out first!!! If they need help in doing this then all they have to do is ask us.

If you want to help us send a message to the dA management, click here, read and then sign our petition if you agree (you will need this PIN code to enter "dapetition"). If you do, please spread the word via Journals, Notes to other deviants and leave your comments here.

Considering what deviantART has to do by a legal stand point concerning art theft, I do not think they do a bad job. Yes there are times when it seems to take forever, but it has been my personal experience over the last 8 years that they do what they can, as fast as they can.

Others may have different stories to tell and I don't think a petition is going to do anything, starting a dialog with the proper members of DA Staff will get better results and I would think much faster as well.

i do understand your frustration, and i do think that dA should be quicker in dealing with reports of this kind but at the same time, they provide you with a watermarking service, they provide you with the ability to make your pictures low-res to prevent ripping and at the end of the day its not just their responsibility to protect your work, its yours as well. it might be an old argument, but i do believe that if you post your work on the internet full stop, you open yourself to the risk of it being stolen

i would personally like to see right-click disabled. i know it can be got around but i dont think most people know how to do that, i certainly dont!

as for online petitions, they aren't worth the paper they are written on :slow:

We want to find out how many others feel the same before taking up the already overstretched staffs time with this issue.
We wouldn't want to be the blame for their slow response now would we???
There have been dialogues in the past but to no avail.

How come we can get the majority of other web sites to remove and ban their members within 24 hours for these infringements yet it takes weeks for dA to even remove our deviations other deviants are selling here (without our permission) and then still let them remain members here!!!

So why should we only submit second rate work here. How can we appreciate and be inspired that way? What would dA become if that's all we did. We all make dA what it is and it's deviants over the 9 years (nearly) have never failed to inspire me with their submissions.

It's the lack of value/respect the dA staff seem show us in not responding proportionately when we report these issues. They do a fantastic job in every other aspect and in the 9 years I've been here this is the first real complaint I've had with them and so do others. But, when it comes down to the things that really matter, they need to do better.

So would you be in favour of "Right Click Disabled" as an option at the submission stage then?

What can they do? How exactly do you want them to 'increase security?' If you put your artwork online, there's always a risk of it being stolen.

I really don't think a petition will do any good.

because most other sites dont have over 8 million members. i already said i agree with the fact the HD should be quicker and they definately should be harsher to the culprits. i am in no way disagreeing with you on that point, but i am pretty sure thats something they are aware of and are working on (like, they took on a new full time member of the CEA team very recently)

i never said it was fair, i said thats how it is. they do give you those options to try and protect your work and unfortunately you do take the risks when you post here. watermark your work yourself if you feel the need to, plenty of other artists do. why dont you take this complaint to the people that matter? $chix0r is always very open to discussion about dA and is very approachable, its worth discussing this with her :)

what exactly, apart from the right-click and a faster/more vigilant helpdesk, do you want them to do??

Anyone that has had their work stolen will feel the same, well not everyone but I would say 90% and that is due to the fact that the work was stolen more than anything. When I see someone stealing my work I want it removed now, two minutes after I see it, simply because I am pissed off and that leads to you thinking it is taking forever to get the issue resolved, when in reality it may not be as bad as you first thought.

I am not a champion of deviantART staff, we have some great ones and some on a power trip, but make sure you keep in mind they have to deal with a lot of red tape legal bullshit like the DMCA. A very very large user base also slows things down a lot. Even dealing with Photobucket and other online image hosting services can take a bit to get things fixed. Try dealing with Yahoo on a copyright violation and you will see the definition of slow, it has taken months to get them to remove something in the past and I followed the DMCA regulations to the letter.

You want to try and improve the system, that is wonderful but an online petition does you no good, I think you would have better results and be able to verify any facts much easier if you did a poll instead. Just be realistic, 24 hour turn around time would be great and it was that fast in the past, we are talking five years ago and a few million users less than we have at this time though.

Well if the staff are overstretched call for more volunteers who care. Staff/Admin/Volunteers should be proportionate to the membership!!!

We all want it to be the best. Just like your mother told you, if you need help in school hold your hand up!
