The year has ending. And since the fashion is to hope something decent will happen in the upcoming year, I will have my two cents on the subject. I have been around this site since
Deviant since Apr 12, 2005, 4:02 PM which makes me 3 years and 8 months old, not counting the days and the rest.

And I have known about deviant art for more than that amount of time. I know deviantart.com since about 2002 but I never dared join because I thought they had standards and my art back then was not up to their standards. My friend Dominick joined, and he showed me a piece he did, a picture of him blended in the background : the basic Photoshop fade gradient applied on the layer on top of the background image. I didn't consider it as art and I still don't. But he was proud of his work and mostly, he felt proud to be part of Deviant Art dot com. I was happy and proud for him too. But I didn't feel ready just yet. Only some years later, when I did something my own self, all alone in Adobe Illustrator, and I really felt proud of the final product, since I did it from absolutely nothing, not sketch, just an image in my head, and the result was decent, looked neat and clean, only then I joined this art community to share it, to get feedback and comments and critics.

Then I had my golden years, even if I was not popular at all, and people barely visited my page, I was happy because I felt I was surrounded by artists who showed me their works,
sharing a bit of their lives and talent with the rest of this community. Back then, I felt only the real deserving and talented artists were allowed on the front page and they
had worked hard to get there, and that was something I looked forward, like a motivation. If I can get better - I have my chances.

Then came around the front page revolution because too many ppl were complaining that the type of art they were doing would never be accepted on front page, so the whole website changed and now everything is permissible which I find is NOT the solution. Why should print screen shots of work in progress get there solely because they got massive faving and viewing because the artists has over 500 watchers ? I do not flame or down the art ! Please do NOT think that ! I simply think a screen shot, of either the desktop (with a fancy wallpaper and icons all over the place) or a work in progress do not deserve that kind of attention. If the final result is truly worth of attention, the final piece will get it's way to the front page in first class train with the amount of views and faves it'll get.

Also since this new liberation of the Front Page, all kinds of ... I don't even know how to call them without using strong language ... of things have been floating around and it makes me think " So this is art in the 21st century... fascinating !" I regularly take out art books from the library and I cannot but be in awe at the old paintings : Those people needed real fucking talent to paint accurately their clients. There was no Photoshop, Illustrator, Gimp and photography back then. They had to learn light, shadows, laws of physics, laws of colours, have the real eye for details and deliver something real and solid. If the portrait had fancy frilly transparent white flowing veils, well, they couldn't just set that layer's opacity to 15% and voila nice blending done ! They had to paint motifs over folded silk dresses and what do paint today ? Naked oversized boobs. Hello talent. Hello art.

I also understand the whole society has opened some major doors with a few revolutions done for our evolution. I have nothing against it ! I am grateful women can think for themselves, act, speak up, be a part of the active society and be somewhat independent if they choose that path, or be traditional housewives with education and hobbies if they chose that path. I also understand sex is no longer a private thing from the bedroom but don't you feel they have pushed the limit of decency a bit far ? Why do they need to put under aged sexualized nymphs all over the adds all over the world - except in ultra conservative religious countries where the religious leader is the best seller.

What really disturbs me now is that on top of having to see that in my every day life around Montreal or any major city for that matter, I have to see it on the website of an art community I thought was serious. And I am not downing or flaming the general "female portrait" or usage of the general female body for art : take that away and nothing would sell, nothing would be popular. I mean take a day and analyze something : what is the ratio on the front page of Woman to Man ? You'd be surprised.

So basically we are a community of "artists" who love deviancy. This is so fucking true as of recent it’s unreal. We love to fave big boobs who don’t have much of the art in them, but that’s details, it’s 90% filled with deviation.

We love to see women depicted as milking cows, again the art angle fails but the deviation wins 90% of the total (I give 10% for the fact that it is captured in some digital manner, thus not only an evanescent abstract like a dream, a word or a memory). Another bit of reflection about the community part : In a community, I thought that the higher hierarchies are meant to be guides for the younger or less known ones. Aren’t the adults examples for the kids and teens ? So what kind of example are we giving out for our teens ? Do we want to promote them breast enlargement to be accepted by society because what truly care about is the breast size only ? I mean, fuck you if you have a PhD – if you are not a D cup, you can go ask for the janitor’s job ?

On the other hand, the non artistic side of this community, there is a like a ton of bitching going around and flaming because some ppl are too easily offended. You may say “Yeah but aren’t you too – you made me waste 3 hours of my life reading through this damn shit of yours!” Yes I am offended by the way this community has turned but you don’t see me go flame and spamm the individuals – that is proven to be such a waste of time and useless method, I won’t bother. I did commented publicly on a devation I found offensive and completely without artistic value (the close shot of an open vagina) “What is the artistic angle of this shot ?” and the author of that shot replied me “None.” … so why the hell do you bother putting that up on an artistic community site ?

Also, I say Hail to Ignoring true deserving artists, not bothering to visit the newcomers, encouraging them, encouraging the younger ones, help them improve and giving them tips and guidance, congratulations, really, you impress me highly.

Because you have to admit it – it has become a brothel of pageviews and most of us are attention whores. (And NO I refuse to use some fancy modern spelling to be cute and polite, we are not Ho’s like in Santa Claus’ jolly Ho-Ho-Ho, we are whores as in we sell our decency to get attention and pageviews. I understand the paying for Add Cast is useful, I do not deny it – I’m sure the money serves for the servers and the technicalities this site has to deal with – but why should true talented artists pay for recognition if their sole talent could achieve that by genuine admiration ?

And I would like to add a comment here : I do not believe all teens of that age are bad, but sadly a leading majority gives a bad name to the minority which is in fact talented and deserving support and appreciation. The most explicit example I can think of is who just turned 15 and who is a huge success because she is talented. At her age she gets contracts from a company settled in the States (thus miles away from her homeland Russia) and trusts in her ability to draw beautiful art and her maturity to deliver her end of the contract. Teens her age should be much more valorized and put forwards to give examples to other ones : If you work hard and if you are talented, if you are skilled – there is hope out there and we (as a community) we will help you !
