WEB POSTER EXHIBITION

~absdostan:iconabsdostan: reports, 23h 18s ago
This web exhibition of 50 posters by the hungarian artists Krzysztof Ducki, Istvan Orosz and Peter Pocs accompanies the traveling exhibition "Hungarian Karma" which is currently at the Viborg Stiftsmuseum, Denmark, 2009.10.23 - 2009.11.22. Text and pictures were kindly provided by Peter Pocs, who wrote about the exhibition
It is already 20 years ago that the political system changed in Hungary. During this period a lot of things changed, but we could not really use the feedom we got as a gift. In the euphorical year of 1989 we started to design political posters which reflected to not only the Hungarian, but to the neighboring countries as well. A lot of things did not resulted as we thought, hoped and would have liked. Months and years passed away and our optimism flew away as well. The exhibition "Hungarian Karma" is a time document of this last 20 years.
The context of the posters is explained in an article by the writer and journalist Peter Nyholm, reprinted from the catalogue.

This one couldn't have come at a better time! With Winter here, this Interview is sure to warm us all up! Fun, & exciting, read on about the interesting subculture of Tiki making......

Tell us a little bit about what you do for a living/hobbies.

I am a professional graphic artist that also enjoys wood carving. Tikis are my specialty. Most of the Tikis come from my head with inspiration that comes from Oceanic Tribal carvings. I would classify my carving as "Polynesian Pop Art" or Poly-Pop.

What got you started in your specialty works?

I've only started carving in 2004, but I have a traditional art background that helped me develop my techniques. Before 04 I was immersed in commercial/computer art till I reached a breaking point. The constant pressure at ad agencies caused Creative Burnout. I started carving as a way to break away from the box and help me rekindle my creative fire. I was born in Hawaii and have always been intrigued by Oceanic Art and surf culture. Wood carving just kind of happened. I was at a friends house hanging out in garage drinking and playing with power tools, when he let me make my first pen on the lathe. I took one look at it and thought it would make a great Tiki - so I took it and carved it with my Exacto knife. It sucked compared to the ones I do now, but it was a beginning.

Do you have any links, or inspirations, you could share?

At the same time I reached creative burnout, I had found a website with forums that helped inspire me.

Check out my thread and you can see my progression from the beginning. Since joining the site I have become entrenched in the Tiki Subculture. Yes, there is a subculture devoted to all things "Tiki". It has its roots in the retro subculture that has crossed over into Hot Rods and Tattoos as well.

What all areas are you capable of?

I have a very traditional art background along with a BS in Fine Art. When I was in school, computers were just starting to become mainstream in the commercial art world. Painting, drawing, ceramics and photography were all part of my college experience (along with drugs and alcohol). While in college I was actually given a beta version Photoshop - it fit on one 3.5" floppy disc (1987?). Now I make my living with the computer and all that it can do. I am an expert in every aspect of CS, Quark and some web programs. I do not post my commercial work because I try to keep fun and business separate. The last thing I want to do is come home and get on the computer - I stare at it all day.

Do you accept Custom requests, and do you take on Commissions?

I do accept commissions but I am very picky about the projects I accept. After all carving is for fun.

What's the funniest, or craziest, thing that's ever happened to you while creating?

I found out the hard way that I am actually allergic to some types of wood. After sanding some pieces I started to itch all over but especially in some private places. I actually asked my wife if she had given me something. That was an expensive mistake (jewelery).

How long have you been doing this?

Started carving in 2004, but have always been involved in art in one way or another. The small stuff I carve only takes a few hours per piece. I usually sit on my couch and "whittle "while watching TV. The bigger stuff takes longer, depending on the amount of detail. I hate putting a number to the time I spend because you can not put a price on time when you are enjoying what you do. If I did, no one would be able to afford my creations.

Besides, I charge by the hour when on the computer (yuck).

Anything else you'd like to share about your artwork?

Keep an eye out for changes in media.

What Artist do you admire the most, and why?

There are several artists that are on TikiCentral that I admire. However, any person that is making a living from art gets my respect.

Are there any tips and tricks you could share?

If someone wants to get involved with carving, I tell them to just make due with whatever you have. Creativity and originality make people stand out.
