World Mental Health Day - October 10th

~alcheme:iconalcheme: reports, 2d 9h ago
A friend of mine, *Flutterings came up with the idea to post a news story about mental illness in honor of the "World Mental Health Day", but with the day fast closing (at least in my time zone) and knowing she has a plethora of other things she is currently dealing with, I opted to post myself.

But my news article not withstanding, her original intent, and beautiful deviation commemorating the day and the essence should not be merely over looked, but seen and applauded ([link]).

The Best of September Visual Art!

`karemelancholia:iconkaremelancholia: reports, October 7
Now it's time for September 2008 Visual Art Features, many new art to discover!

Don't forget that many artists need to be viewed, they deserve it!
Fave Fave Fave!
My main purpose in doing a monthly feature about (to my point of view) 'the best visual art' is to put in the same level as well wellknown artists and popular creations as unknown artists and under-exposed creations.
Artists need to be supported.
So don't be shy!

Visit their pages, support them by faving, commenting, and when you see a deviation that you like also view their gallery entirely, like that you can decide if you will devwatch them or not.
Viewing only a deviation (what is great) is not enough ;-)

And if you want to see your favorite visual artists or art selected to be in this feature for the next month, send me via note the links/thumbs!

:pointr: You can see the previous features here, in the Index i've created!

10 ways to Express Art – Part V

=Derzorvadur:iconDerzorvadur: reports, October 9
The project started as a mean to collect amazing artists all around deviant in a random way or as well for already personal recognition of the same, this is ONLY for the sake of art, no favoritism or popularity has anything to do with this, only REAL good art will enter in these articles, and the art exposed in here is what we personally consider the best of the best.

Who loved it?

Sony Develops Consumer-Level 6 Million Pixel CCD

~eking:iconeking: reports, February 21, 2002
The company has developed a 6.15 million pixel CCD (charge coupled device) image sensor for use in digital still cameras and will begin commercial production of the device in the next few days, the company said Wednesday. The sensor is a generation above the 5 million pixel products used in high-end consumer digital cameras, Sony said in a statement.

In addition to its high pixel count, the new sensor is also physically larger than previous models. At 1.8 inches across the diagonal, the active sensor panel is approximately the same size as APS (Advanced Photo System) film and so camera makers will be able to use their existing optics systems, said Yumi Matsui, a spokeswoman for Sony. That is expected to lead to shorter development times and lower costs for camera makers.

And camera makers will be looking to lower costs if they decide to use the new sensor. Samples of the device carry a cool ¥600,000 (US$4,500) price tag, which is expected to drop to around ¥100,000 when the device enters commercial production shortly, but that is still before the camera is built around it, Sony said.

Still, cameras incorporating the sensor will offer some of the highest resolution digital photography yet available to consumers. Sony said the maximum resolution possible from the sensor is 3,040 by 2,024 pixels which means it is capable of producing images roughly four times the size of those available from today's 2 million-pixel cameras.

Other companies already offer 6 million pixel digital cameras although Sony's new sensor is one of the first targeted at consumer applications. Eastman Kodak Co. already has several professional cameras with 6 million-pixel CCD sensors and FujiFilm Co. Ltd. also sells a camera although it uses 3.3 million pixel sensor with an optical filter and software to produce an output equivalent to 6 million pixels.

Sony is one of the world's largest manufacturers of CCD image sensors, which are also used in digital video cameras and other similar devices. According to company estimates, it has an approximate 50 percent share of the entire market and 60 percent share of the market for digital still camera devices.

That is fucking incredible, and I'm planning to eventually buy myself a new digital camera...but still the price tag is a bit steep, and I can't see myself paying more than $2,000 for a camera until I'm a lot older than I am now...and I don't see this price tag dropping below that [even if it gets a new sensor].

this is good for photographers that will be printing their pictures out..

But if youre doing web design, i dont see why you would need anything above 2.11Mp, since anything higher samples at more than 72dpi..

Ive got a Canon Elph S110, got it for 500 canadian about 6 months ago.. and i havnt looked back... great camera.. I wont be dropping it anytime soon to ge something of this size.

olympus has a 6 megapixel camera out since some time in the fall - and its only $2500 american.. *shrugs*

this sounds pretty cool - especially if sony will start using compact flash (whcih is an industry standard for devices) instead of their annoying memory sticks.. but no, they probably want consumers to pay as much as possible for equipment arg

or if they had an adapter you could get so you could use a cf card with the adapter in a memory stick slot - or something!

i'm trying to work out the math.. if the camera is 600,000 yen now and will drop to 100,000 yen.. that means its 6 times cheaper once its in production and such? which means it will be 1/6 of 4500 usd, which would be 750 usd.. mmm sweet thats almost affordable

of course i could always get the olympus one that is single lens reflex and has adjustable focus ring and suchs and then i would definately have my compact flash ability...

Kodak has a 6.1 back for medium format cameras. The company I work for bought one to go with a Mayima and it kicks ass.

Mmmmm... I want one....

Memory sticks are not annoying, as I own a Sony PDA and a Sony laptop. The fact that I can hold 128mb of mp3s on my PDA is great, considering the tiny size of the stick. At the same time I see your point about the proprietary Sony scheme, though they've licensed out the stick to many, many other companies which have driven the price down considerably.

As far as this camera being $750 US, keep dreaming. The DSC-S85 is $750, and it's only 3.3 MP (I believe). The logic on the consumer price being 1/6 of $4,500 is fine, but like the article says, "but that is still before the camera is built around it." Meaning, $750 for the CCD alone. I imagine this camera costing at least $1k.

But I still want one. =) (Smile)
