Who's to blame?

=Tragic-Memory:iconTragic-Memory: reports, January 17
Ok I have been hearing complaints of how people think DA is turning itself into another form of myspace or facebook.
I do think this argument does have some merit to it. However, I would like to bring about the other variable in this: The people on Deviantart.
The people I am about to describe have become my new pet peeve...I realized this today, while trying to look for some art. The photography section is what did it.

Go browse through any category, any at all. I bet that you will find some of the worst things you have ever seen being called "art". You know it. Especially in the photography category, people and portraits...yeah have fun with that mess.
Yes art and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but come on..there is a line and you very well know the difference. So do the people posting it. These people are what I am ranting about...
In this internet day and age it seems everyone who can hold a pencil is an artist, anyone who can manipulate a photo-no matter how poorly- is an digital master, anyone who can click the button on the camera is a photographer, Any chick that can take off her clothes (this seems to be popular) is a model, anyone who can hold a brush is a painter..do you see where I am going with this. Those of you skilled in your work, those of you striving to get better..you must know what I am talking about..I know you all have seen it.

I know some people are just starting out in their art, and they may not be great. I have been painting for years and I still need vast improvements.
I am not talking about those people. Those people above all deserve compliments and critiques so they can get better.
I am talking about the people that use this site as another means to get a different type of attention because myspace just wasn't enough. Those people that are pompass enough to call themselves great artists and have an ego..even though their stuff is half assed and poorly executed.
I would post some of the "works" I am talking about, but I do not want to single anyone out, You know who you are. Anyone that looks knows who you are.

So before we all go and bitch out DA and it's hard working staff for trying new things out that people may find useful ( even though not all of it is *cough*) and turning itself into a myspace.
Remember just how many people are on here, a lot of f****** people. Think to yourself how many of them really shouldn't be here. How many people are misusing the system and taking up space. Go browse..count how many favor worthy things are on each page..go see what you want to leave a comment on..the ratio is sadly amusing.
Now I am not letting DA off the hook, because they are in some odd way helping this thing, I think they need to be careful with their decisions; but DA and it's staff is not to blame..for the myspace feel of this place...it's the people that think this is just another place to post crap.

And that is my rant for the day.

I agree with you
This is supposed to be a art related website not a hi5 site

You are right! Im sick of seeing some kind of things here...but I still believe dA is a great place!

excellent news article!

another point i'd like to add
is that dA isn't photobucket

i notice a lot of ppl on this site
post their favourite pictures that they found on google

i think it's really terrible when people do that because they're taking credit for something that someone else did!

I cant say I've ever really felt like DA is turning into Myspace, but I have seen a lot of people who misuse the system. And yes some things that people choose to post as art is ridiculous. They manage to step all the way over a very broad line of what is art and what isn't.

But DA is not to blame. DA has always been about the art, and I think, will always be about the art. It's not the system that is to be blamed. It's the people using it.

As a digital artist, photographer, writer et al I find the amount of work on here that exploit the good graces of the system dis-heartening at times, then I realise that it is up to me to sift through the dross to find the gems.

As far as Myspacification is concerned I hadn't really noticed, but ultimately everyone takes their own thing away from DA, and if some use it as a social tool then maybe this can be channelled for the betterment of the whole.

Between idiot guys photographing their girlfriends' privates out of focus and overexposed to late teen Pokemon fanatics slagging Barack Obama and making pithy little stamps about how he's not right for the job, I am fed up with it too. This "Art Because I Say So" attitude is tiresome. This should be a display for ideas or a springboard for bigger and better things. Not rants. There are some really astonishingly good works here. But the crap is overwhelming sometimes. The problem is that there are plenty of submissions and rants and only so many DA admins. Why can't the low ballers leave and go to Myspace or Blogger? They could claim their own site this way. This IS an art site. And a damned good one. It may be jeopardized by a flux of anti-talents.
:icontragic-memory:
You are right! I should have put that in there.

Or people running filters over images and calling them oil paintings..
