Happens all the time...... not only in jewelry, but in all the different art form and artistic expression, but since jewelry (jewellery) made with gems, glass and wire is what I am familiar with, thus this is the subject that I would like to share with you....
I love all the sparklies, and obviously I enjoy playing with beads and wire. Even though to some traditional jewelry artists it is still not consider "real" jewelry. But! To me, I think the possibilities is simply endless! One will need to be creative to create One-Of-A-Kind, truly Original when all that we're using are mass produced "beads" and readily available "wire", whether you use the real or man-made, it is making a HUGE scene on the market of adornment!!
What makes a piece Original??
There are only so many ways to string or restring a strand of beads, there are wired and coiled and wrapped, add a charm there, or finish with a gorgeous clasp... All of these are almost always ready-made, mass produced, so what's the chance of someone else using the same beads or finish as you are??? By changing the earwire, or one bead to another??? Does that make it original??
To me, it is entirely possible!
Since the major trend of artisan made jewelry lately are wire and beads, I am going to feature some submissions to the club, as well as some from our favorites. The one person that single handedly changed MY view with possibilities to what can be done with wire and beads is for sure Eni Oken (
[link] ) She's always been generous enough and for sure confident enough to share her tutorials on the web for such a minimum fee, so check her site out if this is something that you would like to learn or get into. I know for sure she's inspired a lot of people into making a lot of variation, and this recent surge is definitely a great thing! Given us a chance to think about even more possibilities with wire and beads!
So what's ORIGINAL to you???
My definitely of a piece being "Original", is when the artist use these readily available materials, transform them into wearable art. Each piece catches the essence of the artist in it, or even a story to tell.....
In this issue, we're featuring submissions to our gallery, as well as some from our favorites!!

Yes we're starting to do our features again! I will be rolling through all different kind of adornments made by our members and through out DA. So if there's something that you think I should feature, or even a tutorial of how-to, please note us!!
Enjoy!!

There are beaders who just string a line of beads to adorn an outfit, and this is creative, can be original, and profitable. But, I think of this simple beading sort of like picture framing. You select something to match, accentuate, or adorn and outfit, and this is like selecting and building a frame for a painting someone else designed. Think about it; do you buy a dress to match your necklace?
But, then you have beaders who are go beyond simple stringing. Up north their is a trend towards intricate seedbead work I attribute this to the cold weather and boredom through the long winters
There are beaders who use many beadwires to create forms with interwoven metalwork that they've created. There are lampworkers who create beautiful beads that add subject to their works.
There is also the beader who only hand selects the best gemstones, and manages to use them in ways that defies the way beads are typically used.
All in all, it is like drawing, painting, or sculpting. You can draw something, but that doesn't elevate the materials above the level of ordinary. There has to be something happen within the creative process that bestows the rank of "ART" upon the item. This phenomena is what I have been chasing since I first visited a museum at 8 years old. It cannot be taught or given. It has to be found. Actually to teach a specific phenomena is to take the power away from it, destroying the originality of it.
Ultimately the challenge that I would give to any inspiring art jeweler is to strive to create a work that one would buy an outfit to adorn the work, not the other way around.
LOL, my 2 cents worth

I think a lot of what you're saying coincide with my point! And it's definitely interesting to know someone as talented as you are taking notice of the rest!
I will be featuring each and every category that I can think of hopefully once a week. I think bead stringers will come next, then eventually seedbead weavers as well as all the other categories that I mentioned before. And of course, metalsmith!!
Once again, thank you!

The oldest manmade thing was a rock with a hole in it. Czech glass is the oldest industry for beads. They've been making them there for over 3000 years, and it was there with those beads that Art Nouveau was born. The coolest part is that the bead trade that bead shops buy beads is very similar to the old silk trails. We get people from around the world who bring up beads from their cultures.
My one stern warning is that big box corporate evil stinking monsters like Fire Mountain and such are trying to kill the ancient bead trade. Keep this in mind when you need beads. Buy from a bead shop, not heartless soulless big box corporations
OK, I am off my soap box now
And, thank you.
