[PhotoJournalism] Community Choice #1

`Helewidis:iconHelewidis: reports, January 22

Community Choice: Photojournalism

edition #1

The Story

Community Choice started out as a simple series of articles by `misskittyoooo where deviants could choose one deviant’s gallery and pick three deviations from it to feature. In February of 2008 I, ^Helewidis gave a twist to that idea and asked the Senior community to choose one deviation from a gallery (back then it was for Artistic Nudes, today it is for photojournalism) and add a write-up explaining why they loved the piece so much and why we should see the it.

The project soon extend to non-seniors and took the form of Community Choice’s News Articles, embraced by several Gallery Moderators and by everyone in deviantART.

The goal of this project is simple: To provide a fun and simple way of featuring good work from deviantART’s galleries in a collaborative spirit between Gallery Moderators and the community! As the project has grown you can choose to take part on this with more galleries and Gallery Moderators!

The purpose is to expose deviant’s artworks without the “just post thumbs” attitude - we feel this way the Featured works get the attention and respect they deserve!

In home for the project: journal-hub in =resurgere you can read more about this project!

And that’s why the CR (Community Relations) Team exists: to bring Unity into the Community while sharing ART! This is your chance to have Gallery Moderators support the sharing of your chosen artwork and thoughts about it.

Bubble by ~wielyrabin shows us the creation of something so beautiful like a bubble but at the same time so fragile that will exist for only a few seconds. Those beautiful rainbow colours created by the light passing through the windows and the shape of the bubble while it's forming, makes of this image a really particular shot. Actually I think that all images depicting bubbles are somehow special as there will never be one looking exactly like another! They make me feel young again. :P

A beautiful orange sky and the silhouette of a bike, this is what we can see in Lonely Bike by =DaveAyerstDavies. This photo doesn't require a lot of words as for once I have to agree with the saying that 1 image is worth 1000 words. I find it simply relaxing.

upsidedown by =detail24 is a crazy shot from a totally odd perspective. For once we don't see a typical portrait of a bicycle jumping from the distance, but we see a bycicle jumping from the bottom of it. The contrast of the dark sky with the clouds adds something apocalyptic in this image, like if this after this jump the world would end.

Kid from Palistain by =iRooke bring us to the current reality that's surrounding us. It's something we just can't ignore and I think it was a good idea to show us that even kids are demonstrating for something that most probably will end up in history books.

lightning by ~PurpleAlexa is a visual electric shock! I've always been amazed by lightnings in general and this photo wish this almost unreal purple sky is something incredible and powerful.

Since I went to college and started looking at ethnographic documentaries, it suddenly became apparent of the emotion and power that can be caught on film, as I went to uni and started studying culture analysis and I took up photography as hobby, photojournalism suddenly awakened to me and now has become one of my most interested areas, and especially the ethnographic proponents of photojournalism.

Below in no particular order are my top 10 photojournalistic photos for the Community Choice:

This photo is so powerful and emotional, the capture is perfect, considering it was shot on such a small focal length shows ~skize ability to interact with the people he is taking photos of, and also allowing such deep pictures, this capture is perfect and the depth of field works perfectly with capturing the man's complexion.

I love this photo, the capture is perfect and the man though seeming rather alarmed by the fact a camera is in his face, he also holds charisma and charm. A beautiful photograph that really moves me.

wow, this photograph is incredible, the dark monochrome colours work perfectly with the damp night, and really show the hardship of being in that man's position, this photo is very powerful in capturing the difficulties of being homeless.

I was so moved by this when i saw it, it is rare to seem homeless or poor ladies begging and this captured it perfectly, the girl on the left going to talk to the lady really puts this into perspective and is lovely to see people helping each other.

The colours make this photo so appealing, the pink wall and the little cigarette box really help to position the man in the shot, it really helps to reflect the emotion and situation that the man is in, a very moving photo.

A very deep photo, seeing the man on the bike rummaging though a rubbish bin is very powerful, this photo made me quite emotional at the levels of poverty that people live under, a very moving photo which works perfectly.

This photo is very powerful, the choice to keep colour in this photo have worked so well with the piece, encouraging us the audience to become aware of the man's position, and the great capture of him repairing his clothes is very emotional.

An incredible photograph, the way he is using the paper as a sun guard works amazing, and the blandness of the photo really helps to emphasis this man and the paper, a great capture that holds a lot of emotion.

This photo is very interesting, ~carthaki has managed to capture the legs of the passers by and the detail of the the man's possessions, this is all made so much more interesting with the fact he is drinking a coffee and has his cute dog with him.

Probably the most powerful photo from the collection i have chosen, the absence of the man's face really helps to reflect the way the people just sometimes want to disappear and to escape to a completely different world.

But enough of my interpretations and feelings on this deviations, let the photos do the talking and have a closer look.

Read the decription, says it all!
"Time Square..
March 2006..
An anti-Bush event..
Only 5 demonstrators : 2 women, 2 men and a baby... and 20 cups to control them ...!... ( IS that not Absurdity? )
If the 2 women look sad, it's because while they were singing a song agaisnt the war,
some people walked here and screamed : "We do love Bush! We do love Bush, Who do love Bush as we do?"
...AND...
...plentiful hands sticked up......."
Perfectly captured in my opinion!

"Is that your real nose?", haha I think I also asked this when i was a child! What an adorable capture!

One of the most beautiful and romantiv wedding photos I've ever seen, reminds me of Sisi! (Elisabeth of Bavaria)

I just don't find any words for this...

Another ballett photo :D but totally different - first you see only the dancer how they are beautiful captured in an amazing way (BW, motion blur), but then you see the little boy how he watches the scene

And also another wedding photography - but it is far away from being romantic, there's so much vitality in it, two young persons enjoying one of the best and most special days in their life.
Also a very tricky composition how the photographer included the children watching the couple

I really don't undestand why this picture has so less favs! It's a bit disgusting how she's covered with the bugs but the way she looks doesn't only generate compession for her. Even if she looks a bit shy on this picture she seems to be strong and saying "I can't help it, that's my life".

makes me feel good.. like in peace.. again old times! :D

Amazing composition! Look the cat bellow!! :D BEAUTIFUL!

A funny one, photojournalism also has a fun side!! :P lol priceless capture! LOL

HOPE U ENJOY THEM! :P

=UniqueNudes's choice:

I chose images from *slickdj3's gallery. He's a Nakayama Studios Photographer currently working as a civilian contractor in Iraq and takes some amazing photos of the places he's been.

This shot of Bo Bice shows the lighter side of the war, with the USO's entertainment of the troops. The picture really captures the rock feel, making you want to sing along even though it's a still image.

The artist claims this shot of a medical Blackhawk isn't "at all artsy" but I disagree. The framing is spot-on and the slight blur of the rotors gives just a hint of motion.

Although this one is listed in "Spontaneous Portraits" isn't that essentially what photojournalism is? Once again the artist has taken a photojournalistic piece with an artist's eye; silhouetting the figure with just a hint of the wreckage he is standing in.

The title says it all on this one. Even though we can't see the actual blast we can see the aftermath, and realize the impact it must have had, even from this far away.

My top 4:

After reading and enjoying all of your choices I made my own: I chose 4 pictures to feature in my shoutboard until the next edition of Community Choice.

To be part of the next edition please read this journal: [link] and follow the instructions! :thanks:

About Photojournalism (PJ) Editions

What to do:

Choose 5 to 10 photos from the photojournalism gallery and write a paragraph (minimum: 1; maximum: 5) about each of them letting the community know why you chose it and think it should have more audience. The photo cannot have a DD, but it does not matter if the deviant already had one or not in another photo.

Send a note with this and write "community choice" in the subject. Everyone can send a note. Frequency of posting will depend on number of notes received.

Your community, your choice:

I'll make an article when I have a minimum of 5 deviants with their choices. A maximum (in case we have many notes coming) of 10.
There will be no difference in the articles submissions between seniors or non-seniors this time - for the sake of periodicity.

My choice:

In the end I will make a choice too, for a special feature in my shoutboard. With each article I post with your choices I'll chose a top 4 to feature in my shoutboard, along with the names of the artists and of the deviants who chose them until the next article – and with a link to the article, to this journal and to the community-choice hub-journal.

Support!

Display these stamps and help spread the word about the project, the more people learn about it and contribute their features the more general awesomeness will be featured for everyone to enjoy.
