Best of... weekly photomanip features #137

*Iardacil:iconIardacil: reports, December 14
This newsletter was "born" back in March 2007. While things have changed over time, the essence of the newsletter is still the same.
We choose photomanipulations that have made an impression on us from the past week. We do not base our choices on preference or friendships and we have never featured ourselves. We simply pick photomanipulations showing creativity, technique and quality at the same time, and are simply eye-catching. As we are also stock artists, we will only feature the works that give proper credits to stock artists.

Digital Art

deviantART and Pixel Art, ok thanks.

*Metaru:iconMetaru: reports, January 23
I've said I was coming back but honestly, i dont care as much as i did about dA. Guess i can upload some stuff here, but be warned that i dont spend as much time as i am suposed to be. dA is basically the worst place to display your Pixel Art and i completely suggest you that if you're planning on take this way of the pixel seriusly head to PixelJoint or Pixelation. Both are the most dedicated sites you can find around if you really want to learn about this underated (by dA)digital art form. You can find me there and ask anything you want, i'd gladly help you as much as i can.

Now, the Pixel Art Gallery of deviantART is looking for new management, as my dear `ShoneGold burned herself trying to improve what is already a mess and honestly i admire her for the epic work she did. this section of dA lacks the real team it needs to be sorted, if such thing is posible considering the huge damage it has been dealt to it already. its basically full(if not 90% of it) of Gaia avatar rips, MapleStory Avatar Rips, other game sprites rips/edits, and a whole lot of unrelated miscategorized work wich simply leave the true pixel art covered by all the crap now floats there. if you don't believe me, take a quick look over there. as bitter and harsh it may sound, its crap, but dA has no "quality"(and by quality i refere to only that what is uploaded is indeed Pixel Art) measure system so its pretty much you can make anything upload it there and nobody cares anyway. currently, its the place where you dump your MS paint doodles and GIF rips.

surely a quick answer would be "but you are free to report these and the team will remove them". I dare you you spend more than 1hr reporting all these miscats and rips one after the another w/o dying in the process. it was fun in the past, but in the end, is like killing zombies with your fist. you will get overwhelmed eventually.

another second answer would be "but GD applications are open, why dont you fix it". if dA really needs and wants to fix this, they will need more than 1 person to do this. `ShoneGold did an outstanding work and most of us love her for it. but in the end she couldnt do it all alone, and like most of us, dA couldnt be her priority. Such task needs at least a team of 3 or 4 dedicated people to 1) keep active events 2) clean the gallery 3) answer questions. i remember seeing SG spending over 7 hrs a day, but thats justs too much for the amount of work needs to be done.

After the wall of texts hits for critical damage, the short version of this is: either dA puts some eyes on this, or simply let it be flooded as it been for ages.

Unfortunately since pixel art is a relatively small gallery in terms of how much is submitted on this site the staff seems to feel it only needs one moderator. I completely agree with you though, it is a lot of work for one individual and ShoneGold did a great job with something that can be very draining.

Why wouldn't deviantART appoint more moderators? How will several moderators hurt the site? All I can see is improvement.

I already applied and suggested the same thing as Metaru, but since I am not 18 for another 2 weeks I doubt my application will be seriously looked at.

Anyway, I'm with Metaru. I'm not giving up on Pixel Art at DeviantART until we've at the very least tried to save it.

And remember ShoneGold. We can not let her hard work go to waste now.

:iconthetifftiff:
I don't know why they won't, that just seems to be stance they take (smaller galleries in terms of submissions get less gallery moderators). Personally I'd love to see more than one person doing it because I've seen how messy it gets and it's ridiculous to expect one person to do all that.

I'm far from giving up, I just don't think dA wants to put much into the gallery unfortunately so we have to do what we can as a community if they won't appoint more people.

I'm sorry, I just realised my reply sounded slightly like I was attacking you haha.

But indeed, even if dA won't cooperate we have to try and see together.
Though it's a bit sad they won't fully support pixel art of course.

Well, I do agree with you that the state of the gallery is appalling and that people NEED to know more about pixel art and what qualifies as pixel art but in order to make that happen we need dedicated people here on DA. That's why I find it so depressing when people just go 'It's not worth it, I'm better off at PixelJoint'. With that kind of an attitude, what's to become of the poor galleries over here, on DA?
I completely agree that the gallery could use more than one moderator. I wonder if it could work, if there were one Gallery Director (who'd still basically be in charge) and then two or three people who'd have the power to move miscats. It's just that, having applied myself, I feel sincerely sorry for the person who's going to have to start organising the gallery again.

:iconaicaz:
I think they need to account for the current quality of the gallery too; A small gallery overwhelmed with crap is not going to inspire pixel artists to contribute their own hard work; there's not really a shortage of pixel artists, so I think with solid moderation we could achieve a markedly larger PA gallery with a steady quality level (quality in terms of the way metaru specified it in his post), which might well require more than one moderator anyway.

Personally I don't know much about reporting stuff; this could be because I haven't been involved here for long, or really more absorbed in managing my own stuff than looking at others.
So I have to say, it would help if Metaru had given clear instructions for reporting stuff (doesn't matter how trivial it is to do) and encouraged pixel artists to do a little reporting; it's really the only way that it's going to get to manageable size and standards so that moderation becomes a more approachable role here.

Although I'm a little concerned about exactly what standard of ';pixel art' will be enforced. Personally, I regard use of filters and paint modes as simply 'working smart'; obviously this does not match PixelJoint's standards, which is one of the reasons I've become more active here.
For example, gaussian blurring a selection followed by sharpening the selection is a good way to get a nicely rounded shape from a sketchy shape that have been missing pixels.
I would want to be sure that these pieces could go somewhere that does them justice; personally, I regard them as Pixel Art; Something like the 'low-spec art' section found on pixelation would also be suitable: [link]

I wouldn't want to put it into just 'digital art' where it would get lost.

Going to investigate reporting some stuff now.
:iconskeddles:
I honestly would like the gallery to be fixed rather than abandoned. I still prefer pixeljoint, but I like having a place where I can keep all of my art, and have it seen by other people(considering my website gets like 1 hit a month). Multiple mods seem to be the only solution. As for me, I'll just keep submitting my pixels.

Although I started working on Pixel Art because of couple of pixel sigs at some RuneScape forums, I think it would be good to have "clean" Pixel Art section in deviantART too. Not just PixelJoint and Pixelation. To start doing Pixel Art you need to see it somewhere and get to like it. I see deviantART as a pretty good place for that. DA is not that great of a place to get tips on improvement but that's why I've registered to PA specialized site like PixelJoint.

Point is that I completely agree on what you wrote above Metaru.

I got basically nothing important to do while I'm on computer so I could do something useful in here for example... Too bad I need to wait another 3 months to even have a chance.
