My first news entry. Here goes!

It was a couple of months back that I started reading some news articles here on deviantART. I noticed straight away that pageviews are a big topic. Everyone seems to be very sceptical about pageviews. The first news post I read that bashed pageviews was
this very sarcastic one by *
KeroTheHetetic. A couple of months later, deviantART officially started a poll about pageviews. The most popular vote was in favour of deleting pageviews. To top it all off, `
emmil made
this stamp. And those are only a few examples of pageview bashing.
Defining the popular view on pageviewsFrom the looks of it, everyone seems to have a feeling that theyre being treated in an unfair way. After all, pageviews are often seen as a very rewarding concept. The higher your pageviews count, the more people love your art, apparently. But people who upload a lot of fanart seem to have an easier time getting pageviews. Naturally, artists who dont generally create (much) fanart feel left behind.
As a result, fanart and pageviews have become hated things.
The truth about pageviewsThe truth is, pageviews are not an accurate representation of how good and great you are.
The pageview counter tell you how many times your page has been visited. Nothing else. The way you perceive your pageviews is up to you. But there is absolutely no need to get so worked up about them. In the end, theyre just a little extra that might stimulate and motivate you to do your best on creating your art. And if it doesnt do that for you, then thats where it ends. But getting jealous about them is just a very bad way to interpret them.
And the truth about fanartIn fact, fanart is seen in a much worse way than even pageviews, for no reason at all. Sometimes Im quite shocked at what people say about fanart. Its become the scapegoat of peoples jealousy over eachothers pageviews.
I mean, where is the evil in fanart? 100% of my gallery is fanart and I draw it because I'm a big fan of whatever I draw. It inspires me and I really enjoy doing it and I'm sure people enjoy seeing it. And I don't feel I should stop enjoying it just because it hoards pageviews more easily.
Besides, I think fanart is also a way of being reserved. The artist acknowledged that theyre not really good enough yet to make my own creations that might interest people, and it's more or less a tribute to something they find really great at the same time.
I have no idea how you readers will receive this article. I hope Ive changed some of your views on the topic, but Im also prepared for a lot of flaming. I hope deviantART doesnt remove pageviews altogether because of the popular view on them. I love deviantART and I love my pageviews. I hope you love yours too.
Devious Comments
Think about it, if you're browsing the front page, something might catch your eye, right? Something which makes you click on the art above another piece. If you like the piece, you might go on to the person's page. There, one pageview. And it's likely, if said piece was a picture of a very popular anime, manga, book, TV show, what have you, more people may be inclined to view the piece even if it's not that good. Pure interest. Statistically higher percentage of the piece being viewed = higher chance of artist being viewed.
But, I don't think fanart or pageviews are bad things. I'm merely putting in my own opinion. <3

READ IT, PEOPLE. Goddamnit.
I'm one who doesn't really care about pageviews. I mean, I do to a point but at the end of the day, I'm more worried about what people say then how often they visit.
I'm backwards from you through. 94% of my art is original content but that's because I don't think I'm ready or good enough for fan art.
I'll say I'm not one for removal of public shown pageviews but people shouldn't really stop being all mad with people who draw fanart getting all the pageviews. Saying that I feel that maybe it should be taken down.

About fanart, I dont have it in my gallery... because I'm terrible at copying character's features, and even if I'm not so bad, I'd be afraid of ruining my favorite character in a failed try XD
But, in my concept (mine, my personal), I appreciate more original art, original characters, and I tend to get more interested in artists that dare to draw their own inventions
Obviously I like fanart too

And I agree, it's not about pageviews... just because someone has many doesn't mean he's a top artist and just because someone has few doesn't mean he produces crap
Btw who defines what are many or few pageviews? I recently saw a news article featuring unknown artists which stated that all of the artists had less than 30.000 PVs...
