The Pinto horse is a color breed in contrast to most other breeds which are defined by their genetic ancestry. In America, the Pinto is regarded as a proper breed. The Pinto is bred for its color and dose not have a constant conformation. Pintos may be from a variety of breeds, ranging from Thoroughbreds to Miniatures.

Here are the four types of conformation for the Pinto horse. The type is determined by the conformation and background of each horse/pony.

STOCK TYPE ~ Quarter and Paint breeding and conformation

HUNTER TYPE ~ Thoroughbred breeding and conformation

PLEASURE TYPE ~ Arabian or Morgan breeding and conformation

SADDLE TYPE ~ American Saddlebred, Tennessee Walking or Missouri Foxtrotter breeding and conformation

The Pinto comes in two main patterns, the tobiano and overo. a horse with the tobiano pattern will have a dark color that covers both the flanks. All four legs are white, at least around the hocks and knees. The spots are distinct or regular, oval shapes or round patterns. They usually extend down or over the neck and chest. The horses head markings can be a blaze, strip, star, snip, or even solid. The tail will oftentimes be two colors. The overo patten is quite different. The white spots will not cross the back of the horse. The legs will usually be dark but can have markings. The spots will be irregular, and will be rather scattered or splashy. The horse's head markings will be distinct, usually will have a all white face. The tail will only be one color.
