In Greek mythology, Persephone is the daughter of Demeter who was a consort of Zeus, the King of the gods.
This is the story as I remember it (there are many different versions). Persephone represent the harvest. She was highly sought after by the gods, but her mother kept her away from Olympus to separate her. Hades, the god of the underworld or afterlife, fell in love with her and abducted her. Persephone was terrified, and cried constantly when she was seated next to Hades. She was so distraught that she didn't even eat. Demeter was beside herself, searching for her daughter. The earth suffered from the lack of spring and harvest. Helios, the sun, saw what had happened, and let Zeus know. By this time, Persephone was so weak that she accepted a pomegranate from Hades, and sucked 6 seeds from it. Zeus demanded that Persephone be returned to end the suffering of the people. Still having strong feelings for Persephone, Hades refused to let her go - since she had eaten the food of the underworld, he now had a claim to her. Being that she only ate six seeds, Zeus declared that Persephone be on the surface for 6 months of the year, and in the underworld for the other 6 months, thus saving humanity while respecting Hades' authority. While initially afraid of the underworld, being a dark and gloomy place, Persephone eventually grew to love Hades since he always treated her gently and with affection.

I really love this story for quite a few reasons - eventually Persephone came to love Hades and not mind, and Hades being enamoured with the sustainer of life which is practically the opposite of what he is. And the stories in mythology are so interesting!
So, please enjoy the many different styles of art related to Persephone.

Thanks!
I adore this article. I am a Greek Pagan, and Persephone is my patron goddess. A minor change in the story, though--Demeter was not Zeus' wife, Hera was. Zeus just gets around a bit.
