Last July, the Internet had (quite literally)
exploded with excitement as the final episodes of
Avatar: The Last Airbender aired on Nickelodeon. People were writing, and doodling people were even fighting with each other over sillies! The madhouse that final week caved into was so fierce and energetic, that despite all of our different preferences, the fandom came together and watched one of the best adventures in animated history come to its closing.
And it was great.
But as a community, its safe to say, now, that the majority of us are familiar with that empty, spiritless feeling that dwells on once a series is over. Whether its a comic book, a TV show, or even a movie, we know that that final cut at the endThe Endis going to put us into
overdrive, and the thirst we develop for more is simply too strong to sate with what little contribution others can give us.
Still, we scour the Internet and celebrate a couple some weeks post-finale. We talk about how great it was, maybe rewatch a few episodes here and there
Communities are bustling, people are ranting, and ravingthumbs up, thumbs down, yadda yadda! Its almost as if it hasnt ended!
But then a month goes by. Then two. Then fourand suddenly, all of that hype and buildup is disintegrating before our eyes. Its like the dread of having to take down the Christmas tree on December 26th
The spirit is gone, back to the same old TV sched.
Over the past couple of months, Ive seen LJ communities dwindle into idleness. A common question, now, among our social network isnt Did you see that episode last night?, its Are you losing interest?Because a lot of them are! Its completely expected of a few fans to fade away, and a few die-hards to cling and keep on doing what theyre doing
just until they run out of juice.
There's a way to avoid this of course. The fans that aren't ready to run out of juice, or give up their fandom do something else instead: they continue the story. They find out what happens next, they write out the rest of the Avatar Character's destinies with zeal and excitement.
They start to write.
They start to
Roleplay.
Fanfiction, and comics can only sate and satisfy the fandom so much. In an environment that inspires and encourages creativity, you get the most out of your community, and you best of all, youre not the only one there.
