Photojournalism: An Ethical Approach

`Helewidis:iconHelewidis: reports, January 10
If you click the link (title) you'll be directed to an online edition of a book originally published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Publishers, Hillsdale, New Jersey, 1991: Photojournalism An Ethical Approach by Paul Martin Lester.

I consider it food for thought and reflection about photojournalism and ethics and thus would like to share it with you.

Now follows an excerpt to lure you into reading the full version:

A photojournalist is a mixture of a cool, detached professional and a sensitive, involved citizen. The taking of pictures is much more than F-stops and shutter speeds. The printing of pictures is much more than chemical temperatures and contrast grades. The publishing of pictures is much more than cropping and size decisions. A photojournalist must always be aware that the technical aspects of the photographic process are not the primary concerns.

A mother crying over the death of her daughter is not simply an image to be focused, a print to be made, and a picture to be published. The mother's grief is a lesson in humanity.

If the photojournalist produces a picture without a thought for her tragedy, the lesson is lost. But if the photographer cares for her loss, is made more humane, and causes the readers to share in her grief, photojournalism has reached its highest potential.

Despite its frustrations and low moments, the lesson of humanity is why photojournalism is an extremely rewarding profession. For that reason, photojournalism is worthy of the best thought and actions possible by its participants.

Twilight; A New Version Of Nazism?

~juliaGENOCIDE:iconjuliaGENOCIDE: reports, February 23
WARNING; This is being posted by an Anti-Twilighter. If you like Twilight, that's nice. But please try to be mature about all things posted and don't accuse me of being jealous of SMeyer or any of her characters.

As I've seen quite a few times the series Twilight has caused quite a lot of drama. Both on the internet, and real life. But is drama worth it? It's just a book written by an untalented writer. Twilight in no way compares to writers like Stephen King, William Shakespeare, or Anne Rice. Please don't tell me it's the greatest thing ever. It's not. It's riddled with spelling and grammar mistakes, as well as improperly used words, such as chagrin. The characters are also flat and lack personality. There is no plot, and overall it is not a great book. Please, hold back your flames until I am finished.

I have my opinions on the book, as well as bias happening because of the book, and, sadly, violence.

:bulletred:Why I Do Not Like The Series:

1. Edward is abusive
2. Fantasy does not excuse a lack of realism
3. The books are sexist
4. The books (Twilight specifically) have no plot/character development
5. Bella and Edward are in lust, not love
6. Bella is an idiot
7. Imprinting IS sexual no matter what
8. The Twilight books send bad messages

I really could get more into this, but this isn't what this post is about. I'm not going to discuss why I don't like Twilight any further than this, so if you're going to ask me why you're going to get a generic copy and pasted response.

:bulletred:Bias On This Site By Mods?

Many other Antis and I feel we have right to freedom of speech, so we exercise it like we should. People get mad at us and tell us we should keep our opinions to ourselves, but I disagree. Why? Because Twihards constantly voice their opinion about Twilight going "OMG EDWARD!!!!" and it can get very annoying. There are probably about over 100 fan clubs on this site, and about 5 antis. The fan clubs don't get flamed with "OMEC DELETE THIS!! u dont need to go around sying yur opinions!!" Well, then neither should we.
But back on subject. Antis like to voice our opinion by doing Anti art and photo manipulations. Twihards often get butthurt and report these images as soon as they see them. I've had several of my photos deleted because of 'art theft', even though none of them were. I feel the mods are biased about Anti-Twilight work. Why? Because I report Twilight fan work all the time. I never report them without reason though, I mainly report screenshots. And they never get deleted. So screenshots taken off google have more of a right to be up than my own original work? Hmm.... I think some of the mods reviewing the reports may be a little bit biased on their opinions about Twilight. What do you think?

:bulletred:ZOMGZ VIOLENCE

Yes, violence happens over this book. It's really sad if you think about it. Simply saying you don't like a book is getting you beaten to a bloody pulp?
I don't think I can even explain it, so I'm going to direct you to here...
[link]
You're going to be shocked and horrorfied by the stories. There is no defense for what people are doing to Antis so please don't try to defend it.

That's all for now, I'm too tired to write anymore. Once again, please try to be mature and don't flame.

once again, you are exactly right meh dear! This site can be so annoying when people start doing fan arts and stuff, esp. when it comes to gay books (which really are written by an untalented writter. The first thing i would do if i was publishing a book would be to at LEAST go through and make sure the spelling and grammar is correct!). On top of that, it's not fair for Twihards to be like 'OH MY GOSH IT'S EDWARD!!!!! HE IS SOOOOOO SEXY!!!' then turn around to someone who is just like 'ick' and be like 'STFU!!!!!!' if they can voice their opinions, why can't we voice ours?
And that's another thing.. Deleting anti-twilight deviations. now, i can understand if they are against the rules, but the admins. could AT LEAST delete them for an actual reason, not bc it was reported by a subscriber or simply saying no! I've seen several art theft deviations, most of which are posted by subscribers, and have reported all of them, only for 'no action taken' to come back. that's a bunch of BS! your deviations are your own work. that's no reason to make up an excuse to delete them (which, by the way, tell your brother i like the way he thinks!) If you'll teach me how to do photomanip, i'll post some of my own and help support you!
xoxo,
Bounce

THAT BOY NEEDS THERAPY

"All depression has its roots in self-pity, and all self-pity is rooted in people taking themselves too seriously."
:iconnoodle-of-doom:
Oh God, I cannot stand it when people say that Twilight is the 'greatest thing ever written', or that Meyers is a 'genius'.
Twilight was a book that broke my brain with its utter stupidity, and it scares me how many girls are idealising an abuse, moronic, sparkling character, who is a 106 year old virgin who goes to high school, for fuck's sake! Edward's not even a fucking vampire. (Now Mr Lestat de Lioncourt, on the other hand, now that's a real vampire~ <3)
And Meyers? She's just a bored woman with an unhealthy relationship with her thesaurus (and it said somewhere on the book that she got a degree in English? What the hell is the education system coming to?!)

I mean, admittedly, I did only suffer through half of the 'novel' )but I plan on continuing it for arugment reasons ^^), but Edward seemed like a weird guy you just would not approach. I don't care how 'mysterious' he is, or how 'beautiful' he is (and I use that term extremely loosely. If he was truly a gorgeous character they could've at least tried when they were casting the film, rather than go for Pattinson). In fact, the only thing I liked about Edward were a couple of the comebacks he had :/ And he is very abusive. I mean, we all love a little BDSM, but I heard he bites his way through Isobella to save their child when she was giving birth. Which you just dont. Fucking. Do.

And I've seen some of the comments left here on dA by the fans. I can't quote them exactly but they were along the lines of
'omg how can you not like Twilight?!!!11one!! It's the greatest book ever written! Meyers in a genius! *insert comment about Edward's hotness here!* I bet you don't like it because you haven't actually read it. Or you just couldn't understand how deep Edward and Isobella's love is. You're lucky I don't know you in real life. I bet you're a prep. Well I'm a goth/punk/emo and will kill you if I ever meet you >('
except will utterly shit spelling and absolutely no punctuation. For, after all, punctuation and spelling are for the non-sparkley-vampire, educated ones amoung us who prefer proper literature ^^

Okay, so some of the characters were just about tolerable, such as Alice, because she's just so damn adorable. But, unfortunately, the series revolves around Mister Obsessive-Abuser and Miss So-Stupid-It-Hurts

... and that website you linked at the end... scared the shit out of me.
People really do that?! IT'S A FUCKING BOOK.
I mean, I can be an extremely obsessive fangirl, but to go so far as attempted murder?! Jesus, these fans are scarier than I thought o___o;;

But they're really taking your artwork off because of 'art theft'? Christ, have we not just had this who Vampirella thing end?! dA are incredibly biased by which artworks they remove. You can have screenshots of characters, artwork that's so very obviously stolen, and even a lot of pictures close to porn on here, as long as it's not got a hate message on it. Or you're not popular. Because we all know that the popular are exempt from the normal rules.

... anyway, I think that's the single longest comment I've ever made ^^; (fuck, it's longer than most of my journal entries o___o; ).
In short; Twitards are fucking scary, and dA is biased.
And I agree with you ^^

(I'm gonna take this opportunity to apologise real quick for the amount of swearing, italics, rambling, and any possible spelling/gramatical errors (but at least it's better than Meyers, ne?) in the above bitching session, and I hope you enjoyed it ^^ <3)
