I love a good portrait! I mean, who doesn't? But my fetish would have to be portraits, and so that's why I've posted up a bunch of my favourites! All different kinds, showing faces, not showing faces, having silent meanings, or just beauty in general.
Enjoy!

A picture is worth ZERO words..

`Obsidian-Fox:iconObsidian-Fox: reports, March 5
Well at least according to some people here on deviantART..

I am a firm believer that a picture is indeed worth a thousand words, but a few words to lead the viewer into your frame are always appreciated.

This is especially true here on deviantART. A community of artists covering the wide range of the artistic, or professional spectrum, from beginners, to amateurs, and even some professionals.

It isn't only directed towards photography, but to all mediums displayed on this site. Writing even the bare minimum, a few sentences at least, will change the way the community appreciates what you've posted..

The biggest reason to write something in that little box, is to show the people who appreciate your work that you aren't a conceited jerk, content to let your 'fans' make what they will of your creation, It makes you approachable, and even more likable.

In my personal experience, with my own work, I find that if I leave certain details out, people will inevitably start asking the same questions.. (what lens was this shot with.. who is this band?) and that gets really annoying, having to write out the same answer multiple times..

because you know, a LOT of people don't read the other comments before making theirs.. ;)

I see a lot of people not replying to comments with these questions, which makes people think "If he/she/it* doesn't reply, why do I even leave comments.. or even watch them?"

*(damn androgynous emo shits) ;)

On the other side of that issue, if a random passer-by stumbles on to your work, and reads a funny, interesting, or thought provoking comment on the image you just posted, they may just choose to watch you, comment, or browse through more of your gallery, instead of just faving and running.. as we all so often do..

If you are proud of your work, let us know, write something about the piece you just posted, even if its just some technical specs.

Its appreciated more than you know.

Keep these things in mind..

A concept is not always clear.

A question is easiest to answer before its asked.

If you need a visual aid, to what makes an outstanding artist comment, check out every single image in Chris Weeks' gallery

Could explain why most of my watchers have stopped leaving comments.. hm.

:iconlmwilliams:
I have to agree on this even though i am a bad describer of my work. I feel it comes from two perspectives however that 1) i lack confidence in saying what i want to say about the piece because ill always change my mind/regret/think i havent done it justice and 2) i dont think enough people are viewing my work to write a 3 sentance analysis of how, why, what and when. I keep it short and simple because i have no obsessive fans wanting to know every detail like some of the larger artists.

Maybe if i become famous ill be more thorough. Im more thorough in comment giving for sure.

Well said.

On the rare occasions I do upload something, I tend to over describe things actually. I start blabbing on about something else and I have to remember to stay on track. :giggle:

In vector or vexel art, it is most important to disclose which program was used because so many deviations are miscatted. It saves a lot of time and effort if that info is in the comments. I also like to know a little about the deviation if it has caught my eye, I want to know more about it.

I'M not locked up in here with YOU, YOU'RE locked up in here with ME-Rorschach

Well behaved women rarely make history.

If you can read this, your too close to your monitor.
:iconobsidian-fox:
well, you wont learn to be more confident if you dont try.. you can always edit the comment later ;)

Horribly intrusive watermarks are tacky. If you're concerned about people stealing your photos, don't post them on the internet.

Photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event. (HCB)
:iconlmwilliams:
Mmm, well if i find the time to write some more expansive comments i shall try ^_^

...a cool place to see life as it is.
:iconmiddeneaht:
IMO Chris Weeks overdid that - he writes nearly a 1Kb of comments each time, but that's a bit too much to my taste. The comment should support picture, but not drag attention from - either by its size of by words that are more interesting that the picture itself.

:iconmiddeneaht:
And in fact there is a rather common mistake: sometimes people explains their photo that much, so you may wonder "are they explaining it that long because they didn't got skills to put explanation into picture itself"?
