Little bit different than portraits, but then again a band promo shot is just a different type of group portrait.
I always tell them I'm not their band's stylist or publicist, but think about what image they want to present as a band, for their personality and style of music and so on. And that it helps if one guy isn't wearing white or very light colors while another guy is dressed in black or very dark colors - that oh so much fun exposure scenario!
I like the "beauty" style head shots as well, where the bare tops of a model's shoulders are visible. Not necessarily any nudity involved at all, just a tank top where the straps can slide off the shoulders. That can be very clean looking, if the makeup is done properly so the skin tone doesn't change from face to neck and shoulders.
Of course, again, these are different "portrait" scenarios than just your traditional one, and depending on the kind of person and kind of portrait, some other styles to think about.
