How to Commission an Artist

*ArynChris:iconArynChris: reports, November 16
A comprehensive guide to commissioning, based on my personal experiences and observations. This guide does not address hosting contests, nor does it specifically address the unique challenges of commissioning through specific websites, though some typical scenarios are mentioned in passing. Topics include choosing the artist, why it's important to make sure you can afford it, how to contact the artist, payment, what WIPs are and why you might want to see them, and legal rights of both parties. Legal rights are discussed at the beginner level and are NOT in depth here.

When imitation stops being flattery

=morbidthegrim:iconmorbidthegrim: reports, March 13
When imitation stops being flattery

Before I start this is not a criticism of anyone that I know, that I watch or watches me, this is nothing more than a general observation

As you go through dA you will always come across some superb pieces of art, this is the place to be if you want to see the best there is and it will always surprise you with the standard some can achieve.

This place is an inspiration and I have no doubt I would not be where I am now with photography if not for the members of dA, I still have a lot to learn but this is my and others prime source for information and inspiration.

How many times have you come across a piece that blows you away?

How many times have you thought I need to do that?

I know I have, I do it near every day I log on.

But where do you draw the line between being original and simply copying what others have done?

The thought patterns and concept of someone’s art work is as vital to the piece as the work itself, it says so much about the artist and how they went about the piece, the reasons behind it and why they did what they did, if you look at any work in the right way you should see this every time.

If though you have seen something and simply decided to copy what you have seen you will not see that spark in your work, its simply an imitation of another’s.

So you lose something in the process, it’s the life the image should convey because that spark, that life belongs to another.
What can you do?

Look at the work that has inspired you, see what it is that makes you go wow and try to understand what the artist was doing/thinking about when they constructed the image.

Look at the technique used and how it was applied.
Take that away and look at how you can apply it to your own work but be original in what you do, don’t make a carbon copy of what you have seen, it simply will not work.

Why?

Because you will simply become frustrated with yourself when you cannot get your work to covey what the original work did, by putting your own feelings into your own piece of work you will convey your own feelings through your work.

Use your mind, not someone else’s by doing so you will free your mind and then the world is yours.

...a cool place to see life as it is.
:iconfuriousennui:
I would add that it is unwise to imitate yourself, too. There are a lot of image makers who have struck upon something that works well for them, and they endlessly repeat it. That's not creativity. That's replication.

I don't think I have seen anyone trying to copy my style. Either I'm too crap to bother copying, or I don't have an identifiable style, or my stuff is so random no-one could copy it!

Very well said.

I completely agree with you... Art is a form of catharsis... You can free yourself only by being YOU and expressing your own perspectives on life!

A great article with great points. i'm inspired!

I think its not bad to try and copy something u like.Bad is trying to present it as something that you own.A teacher of mine said to me :''What do you want to do?Something original? It will never happen!Almost everything you think of,has been done in photography, but the important part is how YOU see it!''
So even if someone tries to imitate something its good!Trying to do something you like will give you another perspective of things and maybe u can combine with your own style in the future. We all keep the things we like in our head and the mix of it all defines our opinion about things!''Bad imitation'' for me,is when someone has no creativity and tries to make a clone...
:iconstuartperry:
Inspiration is a trigger that sparks the artist. We can be inspired by events, surroundings, people, words, other artworks and thoughts, if your artwork reflects that inspiration this is not a bad thing, but if you copy exactly the very thing that inspired you this is just mimicry and is not original nor can it teach you anything. Sometimes we need to replicate others for practice, that is not a bad thing, when we add our own originallity and style, thoughts, feelings and point of view into the work then it becomes ours...a piece to perhaps inspire others.
If you are good at what you do, you will know it as soon as someone else copies you, after all no one copies crap, right?
When i was learning to compose music, I would try to listen and then recreate what i had heard just so I could understand its structure, form, flow and appeal, with photography it was the same, now I find that I try to be original but with millions of people all aiming cameras and every damn thing and uploading those images into every photo sharing site there is, then its hard to be original, almost impossible. But what I try to do is make my interpretation original, the angle original, the color balance original, the process original. That way it becomes mine. Hopefully for others to copy.
For me nothing is more boring than repetitive technique in artwork, there should be progress, new experiments (even if they are a little brave) this way the artist can always improve and become more versatile in their presentations and can present pieces depending on mood at time in a much better way.
Has Aris's =aR-Ka teacher said "What do you want to do? Something original? It will never happen!Almost everything you think of,has been done in photography, but the important part is how YOU see it!"
I think that sums it all up the best.

Well said!

Copying up to a certain point might be acceptable, but sooner or later you should simply start developing an own style.
