How to Commission an Artist

*ArynChris:iconArynChris: reports, November 16
A comprehensive guide to commissioning, based on my personal experiences and observations. This guide does not address hosting contests, nor does it specifically address the unique challenges of commissioning through specific websites, though some typical scenarios are mentioned in passing. Topics include choosing the artist, why it's important to make sure you can afford it, how to contact the artist, payment, what WIPs are and why you might want to see them, and legal rights of both parties. Legal rights are discussed at the beginner level and are NOT in depth here.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the dAlaxy

`Flutterings:iconFlutterings: reports, March 23

Welcome to The Hitchhikers Guide to the dAlaxy.

If you've found yourself traipsing around the confusing but mystical world of dAmn (the deviantART messaging network forums and chatrooms for example!) you should know that the lovely talking punctuation remind us often to read the deviantART Etiquette and the Chat Network Rules. However sometimes big words and passing spaceships can lead us into confusing territories. So you don't get hit by any unexpected bans or asteroids - here's the Dummies Guide to the dAlaxy....

"Prohibited Commentary"

:bulletred: The Etiquette says... We insist that you refrain from comments which are racist, bigoted, or which otherwise offensively target a philosophy or religion... or... offensive remarks based on gender or sexual preference and that you do not make any remark which is intended to be a direct insult to an individual, group, or genre of artwork. Hate propaganda is met with zero tolerance. Comments which are overly aggressive, personally insulting or needlessly abusive are also prohibited.

:bulletorange: `Flutterings says... This one is an easy one to start off with - basically deviantART is not your creche. They expect us to act like mature adults (you have to be over 13 to be here, so act it!). Racism, sexism, hate comments and purposefully hurtful comments are unnecessary in any form of communication - and therefore not accepted here.

:bulletgreen: What to do... If someone makes a comment that you believe is inappropriate to you (in any of the ways listed above OR if it constitutes as harrassment or a personal insult) then please notify the staff via the deviantART helpdesk. If it is a case of a personal dispute it is not deviantART's position to fix it for you - so use the handy 'block user' tool in your settings menu so they can't contact you again. Easy.

"Discouraged Commentary"

:bulletred: The Etiquette says... While not strictly prohibited we must insist that all personal arguments, disagreements, and other volatile "personal" issues within be confined to private communications such as Notes, emails, or Instant Messaging programs. Likewise we discourage public accusations and other similar situations.

:bulletorange: `Flutterings says... Similar to "Prohibited Commentary" this is all about how you relate to the users around you. DeviantART asks us to moderate ourselves in our arguments - they should not be public things, it can cause an escalation and other people to get involved. Purposefully trying to get other people to harass someone you are in an argument with is against the rules (for example inflammatory comments about a user in your journal). Remember the old saying your mum used to have - two wrongs don't make a right? No matter what someone has done to you - DON'T make your arguments public. Take responsibility for them yourself.

:bulletgreen: What to do... If someone has done something to offend you, including inflammatory comments, art theft, idea theft, bullying, anything - then contact the staff via the deviantART helpdesk to help it be resolved out of the public eye. Think of it as looking out for your friends and watchers, you wouldn't want them to be banned for harassment because of an argument they weren't actually involved in, would you?

"Exploitive Commentary"

:bulletred: The Etiquette says... Exploitive commentary is typically considered to be disruptive... For example... ‘spam’ (sending large numbers of identical notes or comments) or ‘flooding’ (placing large numbers of comments rapidly on a single page or craft a single comment which consumes a large amount of page space) the forums, notes system, userpages or other areas of the site. Flooding usually disrupts page loading times and serves no useful purpose.

:bulletorange: `Flutterings says... This can be very annoying and is mostly done to annoy or attract attention (sometimes a technique used by 'trolls' or 'commercial spammers'. As there is not, at this time, a good reason for spamming or flooding they are not allowed. Examples of spamming or flooding are comments that serve no purpose other than to annoy the recipiant or to advertise the user or a product by the user. Its a complicated situation but go with the theory that if you need to leave someone a comment or want to communicate with them then you are probably not breaking this rule.
:bulletblack:It's OK to leave messages on 5 different deviants pages to say Thank you for recent favourites on your artwork.

:bulletblack:It is NOT OK to leave messages on 5 different deviants pages to say Hi if you do not know them in the hopes that they will visit your page and boost your page views just because you have done so.

Other forms of spamming that are not allowed are excessive shouting (use of all capital letters), gibberish (random letters with no attempt to form communication), excessive word stretching (example: streeeeeeeeeeeetch), pasting large chunks of text randomly, unsolicited advertisments for your deviantART profile or work (unless in #ThumbShare) or asking repeatedly for people to view your work without any other attempt to make conversation.

:bulletgreen: What to do... If you recieve a comment that you believe to be spam click the handy 'Report as spam' button and it will alert the administrators. If it contains a link you are unsure of then do not click it!

"Mature Content"

:bulletred: The Etiquette says... DeviantART strictly prohibits the submission of materials classified as pornographic or obscene. There is no exception to this prohibition. The most common ‘undesired’ viewing material may include, but is not limited to, images containing artistic nudity (see details below), large amounts of simulated blood and gore, or generally violent themes.

:bulletorange: `Flutterings says... As this content is not allowed anywhere on DeviantART its only natural that its not allowed to be linked to or posted as thumbs in the dAmn network. Linking to a pornographic site is a bannable offense! The definition of pornography includes ANY underage models in an implied sexual state or position.

:bulletgreen: What to do... If someone posts a link then go to #MNAdmin to report it to a dAmn Operator. If it is a deviation you can also click 'Report Deviation' > 'Prohibited Content' to have it reviewed and potentially removed by the DeviantART team.

"Staying Relevant"

:bulletred: The Etiquette says... All threads started within a specific forum and all comments within those threads should be relevant to the forums Title. This means that, for example, all threads within the Movies forum must relate to a motion picture and the comments within those threads should also remain on the appropriate topic.

:bulletorange: `Flutterings says... This one should be obvious! If you are posting within a forum about Movies then your thread should be about Movies! The forums are broken down into categories so that other users can find things they want to talk about easily. If you post it in the wrong place you will find it harder to find other people to talk to! This rule also applies if you are replying to someone elses thread, stay on the topic of their thread. For example if they are talking about the latest Batman movie its not appropriate to ask if anyone liked the Harry Potter Books.

:bulletgreen: What to do... If you see a topic going awry try to steer it back into the right (original) direction, or simply suggest to the person who's deviating (hehe) from the topic that they join you in a new thread.

"Play Nice"

:bulletred: The Etiquette says... We encourage interactivity and we allow comments to be either positive or negative in nature providing that they remain constructive and promote a worthwhile dialogue.

:bulletorange: `Flutterings says... DeviantART understands the value of constructive criticism. Sometimes being told that your artwork isn't perfect can be very helpful - IF it is backed up with suggestions and reasons. Keep your comments constructive or positive.

:bulletgreen: What to do... Take critique graciously, even if you don't agree with it try to remember that someone took the time to study your work to try and help you improve. You are not obliged to take their advice, but you are obliged to think about it.

"unCommon Sense"

:bulletred: The Etiquette says... It is important to remember to be as clear in your intent as possible while communicating on the internet. Text communications do not afford a clear representation of sarcasm. Please use common sense when posting to avoid confusion.

:bulletorange: `Flutterings says... A kind reminder from DeviantART that while you may know your joking the internet can be an unforgiving place for miscommunication. Remember to re-read anything you say that could be taken as offensive and make sure it is clear in the context what you actually mean.

:bulletgreen: What to do... If you are offended then contact the staff via the #MNAdmin room or the deviantART helpdesk. Threads which are misplaced, which contain inappropriate subject matter (such as sexual discussions), or which contain an undesirable number of insults or other violations of the etiquette policy will be locked and closed to further commentary.

"Abuse"

:bulletred: The Etiquette says... The deviantART staff will not tolerate attempts to exploit or disrupt the layout, navigability, or general use of the site. Such actions disrupt the ability of the community to access and review artwork and are considered Site Abuse.

We will issue no warnings for violations of this nature. Violators will be banned immediately upon the discovery of the disruption or abuse.

:bulletorange: `Flutterings says... If you can't even imagine what any of the things described are then don't worry about them, it's not the sort of thing you do by accident. This rule is to warn against malicious anti-site work. Including phishing, scamming and hacking of any kinds.

:bulletgreen: What to do... If you are suspicious use the 'Report Spam' or contact an Operator in the #MNAdmin room.

"Appeals and Bananas"

:bulletred: The Etiquette says... Appeals, inquiries, or questions concerning deviation removals, violation notices, account suspensions, or other administrative actions should be addressed to the official deviantART helpdesk where they will be forwarded to the appropriate department for review.

:bulletorange: `Flutterings says... The deviantART staff have to maintain a difficult equilibrium on this site. Balancing the desire to deviate from the norm and create sensational and shocking art - and the legal ramifications of such things. They work very hard to keep the site somewhere in the middle, giving us space for freedom but the control to be able to enjoy this artistic environment without being harrassed or offended. Sometimes they make decisions we don't like, but they aren't done out of spite or some kind of vendetta. You can calmly ask for more information via the helpdesk. Remain mature, and once again keep it private. Using your watchers / friends / cats / cousins to gang up and mutter about how badly a job they are doing won't magically make your deviation or comment within the policy they were previously breaking, nor will they make the staff or rules go away.

There ARE rules, and if you are unwilling to abide by them then you are not a welcome member of the community.

:bulletgreen: What to do... Contact the deviantART helpdesk directly.

"Keep It Legal"

:bulletred: The Rules say... Acting in an illegal fashion or discussion of illegal activities is not allowed. deviantART is not responsible for anything you say or for any consequences that may arise from your words and actions. Those that break this rule will be the one's held responsible, not deviantART. Also please note that the use of dAmn to link to external web pages that violate these rules is strictly prohibited.

:bulletorange: `Flutterings says... Don't break the law. This includes the law of the country you are in AND the law of the country that deviantART's servers are in. (U.S.A.). Things like asking or providing assistance in getting hold of pirated software, dvds or music is not allowed. Nor talking about drugs, illegal materials, texts or images, or sexually explicit conversations. Requests for help or advice on the methods or acts of suicide and self harm are also not tolerated. This site has to ban you for these things to keep it safe and legal - so keep your head on and your mouth shut!

:bulletgreen: What to do... You can report suspected illegal action or conversation in #MNAdmin to an operator or via the deviantART helpdesk.

"Viagra Just $1?"

:bulletred: The Rules say... The Chat Network is not to be used for commercial purposes without the consent of deviantART, Inc. (this does not include the promotion of on site prints in appropriate channels). This includes spamming or advertising for outside companies.

:bulletorange: `Flutterings says... This site makes its advertisers pay money to contribute towards the expense of keeping it running, so any advertising of external companies or products is not allowed, not to mention that being spammed with advertisements can disrupt our artistic temperments!

:bulletgreen: What to do... If you want to advertise you have to contact the DeviantART HQ here to get your paid advertising package sorted.

"You Are Who You Are"

:bulletred: The Rules say... You are responsible for anything you say while you use the Chat Network, and for protecting your own system. You are responsible for any actions you take based on information you receive online. Use your own judgment when evaluating information provided through the use of the network.

:bulletorange: `Flutterings says... This is another reminder to use common sense on DeviantART. Just like any where on the internet, DeviantART is subjectable to misuse. You can't be sure of who you are talking to, so you are responsible for what links you click and who you talk to. DeviantART asks that you don't give out your passwords, credit card details, age and personal information online.

:bulletgreen: What to do... If you are concerned about a members behaviour contact the deviantART helpdesk about 'Harassment'.

"Many Tongues"

:bulletred: The Rules say... Many nationalities and languages can be found in the chatrooms. To help the deviantART staff, all official chatrooms are English speaking rooms only. This is so that we can moderate the rooms and help people where necessary to the best of our abilities. However, there are many unofficial channels which are multi-lingual for your use.

:bulletorange: `Flutterings says... This rule is simple, the official deviantART rooms (like #devart) are English Speaking Only.

:bulletgreen: What to do... Seek out a community in your own language, if you need help I suggest getting in contact with `edwheeler.

"Consequences and Punishments"

:bulletred: The Rules say... Bans are set at the discretion of the MN@ admin setting the ban. The minimum period for any ban is 1 day (24 hours) and can be anything up to indefinite. If you have a query about a ban in an official room then you can inquire about it through the deviantART helpdesk.

:bulletorange: `Flutterings says... The Message Network admins (those with the @ signs) are responsible for keeping the network within the policies laid out here. They try to act with whatever information they have at the time, as fairly as possible. They are not out to get you, If you break a rule they will..
:bulletblack: 1: Warn you, within the chatroom, that your behaviour does not meet the Etiquette and Rules, and provide you with a link for you to review those rules before you continue using the network.

:bulletblack: 2: Remove you from the chatroom / lock your thread / remove your post.

:bulletblack: 3: Ban you for a set amount of time, from 24 hours up. This can be from a specific area (like a certain room) or the whole network.

:bulletblack: 4: Ban you from using the network permenantly.

:bulletgreen: What to do... If you are removed from the network you will recieve a note detailing why and for how long. To reply to this or appeal the ban please do so via the deviantART helpdesk instead of replying to the note.

"Flutterings2"

:bulletred: The Rules say... The creation or use of existing accounts for the purpose of ban evasion is not tolerated and will result in the extension of the ban period, as well as a possible ban on all alternate accounts from the Chat Network and deviantART itself.

:bulletorange: `Flutterings says... If you have been banned on DeviantART, you are banned from DeviantART. Full stop. Creation of another account to avoid that ban will result in further bans - if your ban isn't permanent this could get you a permanent ban so don't do it.

:bulletgreen: What to do... Tidy your room!

"Staff Titles"

:bulletred: The Rules say... In order to avoid confusion between your private #chatroom operators and actual deviantART staff and administration, we require that you do not use the term "Staff" or "Admin" in reference to your private chatroom or your operators or founders.

:bulletorange: `Flutterings says... This is a really easy one, it confuses new people in the area if normal members are calling themselves staff, so if your room has this in it you will be asked to rename it by a member of the team.

:bulletgreen: What to do... Try names for your privclasses like 'Volunteer' or 'Team'.

"That's All Folks"

I hope this simple break down of the dAmn Etiquette Policy and Channel Rules was helpful! See you around!
