Rubber ducks get there name from the early ducky days when they were made of rubber. Today the are made of plastic but retain the name.

There are hundreds of rubber duck races every year with the largest held in Ohio, where over 100,000 ducks are raised to benefit the Freestore Foodbank.

According to this study by RubaDuck [link] the average rubber duck has enough "floaty force" to float one ipod nano. (I wouldn't so try it tho)

If your duck has trouble floating, a metal washer glued to the bottom (carefully placed to preserve the squeaker) may help.

A shipment of rubber ducks was washed off a ship and broke open in the Pacific Ocean 17 years ago. Oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer has tracked the ducks for over 17,000 miles. Within 10 months the ducks reached Alaska, they then circled around and headed back to Japan before landing in North America. Some of them continued into the Arctic and became frozen in the ice and traveled slowly east before thawing and entering the Atlantic Ocean. They arrived on the shores of Britain in 2007. The ducks proved to be very useful in helping scientists understand ocean currents.
