The Difference Between Cell and Pixel Shading

=ElvenCrystaline:iconElvenCrystaline: reports, April 5
What is the difference?
There is a major separation between cell shading and pixel shading. For those who don't know what they are, here are their definitions.

:bulletblue: Cell Shading :bulletblue:
Cell Shading is shading in the style of what would be found in an animated movie. Typically there are only two shades, the flat color and one shadow color although a third highlight may be used as well. It is often created by sectioning off the shadow and flood filling. It is different from pixel shading because it emulates the animation style as opposed to following pixel techniques such as dithering, anti-aliasing and using a range of shades.

:bulletblue: Pixel Shading :bulletblue:
Pixel shading is by the use of placing each color pixel by pixel with the exception of the flood tool. Shading such as dithering, anti-aliasing and using a range of shades also are a part of pixel shading to give the artwork depth, texture and style.

See the difference now?

For the cell shaded deviations, the category that best suits them is in Misc. since they do not use true pixel shading techniques.

Cell shading does not necessarily have to be traced. It is just a technique, but it is different from pixelshading or even vectoring. Good article, just clear and not very nitpick-y :)

Thanks and you're right on the money!
