Animals in Danger: Birds of Prey

=Flame-of-the-Phoenix:iconFlame-of-the-Phoenix: reports, April 10
:damphyr: [NOTE] It seems for every known artist on Deviantart, there are hundreds that are overlooked, many that are exceptionally talented. Some of them will be featured below; please, if you have the time check out their galleries and support them! :)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

:pointr: Hundreds of animals today are facing extinction: their homes are destroyed, they are slaughtered for their body parts or fur, and their food sources are lessening.

:pointr: One way to help these animals is by letting people know how bad the situation is and try to encourage people to support various groups trying to help out endangered animals. I decided to write a series of articles featuring some wonderful artists and their photographs or drawings of certain animals, some basic information on the condition of said animal in the wild, as well as some groups/clubs in case you want to get involved. Enjoy!

//Status levels (from worst to best)://
Extinct in wild, Critical risk, Endangered, Vulnerable, Lower Risk, Stable

:target: Featured: Raptors

*This is not the complete list of endangered raptors, just a sampling. *

------------------------------------------------------

Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)

:postit: Fast facts: - can reach up to 200 mph (322 kilometers per hour) when diving

- when a bald eagle loses a feather on one wing, it will lose a matching one on the other: that way it doesn’t lose it’s balance

- females are always larger than the males

- most large birds of prey use their voices only during breeding season, but the bald eagle uses it year-round

Status: :bulletyellow: Vulnerable :bulletyellow:
Due to: Loss of habitat, shooting, and DDT poisoning (in the past).

Drawings/Sketches/Paintings

Other Media

------------------------------------------------------

California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus)

:postit: Fast facts: - in 1982, the population consisted of less than 25 individuals

- do not have vocal chords

- can take up to a week for a chick to break out of its shell

- do not have talons, only have blunt claws

Status: :bulletred: Critical Risk :bulletred:
Due to: Loss of habitat, hunting, pesticide residue, lead poisoning, and collisions with power lines.

Drawings/Sketches/Paintings

Photography

------------------------------------------------------

Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja)

:postit: Fast facts: - hind talons can get up to the size of grizzly bear claws and its feet can grow to the size of a man’s hands

- one of the largest and most powerful eagles

- its wingspan can be around 7 feet long

Status: :bulletgreen: Lower Risk :bulletgreen:
Due to: Hunting and loss of habitat due to logging and rainforest depletion.

Drawings/Sketches/Paintings

Photography

Other Media

------------------------------------------------------

Steller's Sea-eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus)

:postit: Fast facts: - the scientific name roughly translated means "eagle of the open seas”

- their nests are very large and can consist of 400 or more large branches

- more aggressive and powerful than its closest relatives: the Bald Eagle and the White-tailed Sea-eagle

Status: :bulletyellow: Vulnerable :bulletyellow:
Due to: Loss of habitat, poisoning of their food source (fish).

I think this is wonderful, and I like you calling attention to a group of endangered species within one species. I like you am deeply saddened and worried about what we are doing to this earth. Keep featuring and working on getting the message out to everyone. Thanks for the feature...Annie

Thanks for featuring my work!!! It's good to get my stuff seen in other places on DA! By the way, you do have a picture that was drawn digitally posted under a photography drawing. It's the one of the harpy eagle which is close-up with a dark background. :) It does look like a photo but it is in fact a really great digital painting.

I took a load of pictures of Buzzards today... there were five of them fighting/mating or something...

And can I disagree with your Bald Eagle fact... as you quoted the speed to be faster than the fastest bird in the world (my fave animal) falco peregrinus, the peregrine falcon. (followed by the spine tailed swift and the wood pigeon - the Peregrines favourite prey).

Nice collection of some very important raptors. Hopefully enough people can be found to care so these guys don't go away forever. Thanks for including me in your collection.
