S is for Series

*Cattereia:iconCattereia: reports, 23h 23m ago
Works in a series give the artist the ability to show more than just one perspective or emotion in a work. Working in such a way can also allow the artist to show time which can be difficult to show in just one panel.

Dungeons and Dragons - Not Just Chainmail Bikinis.

*Mistresselysia:iconMistresselysia: reports, April 17
Dungeons and Dragons - what image does this particular phrase conjure up in your mind? Hours of fun with a group of friends, eating snacks and drinking beer whilst pretending to be a half-orc barbarian called Keith (ahhh... memories are made of this!!) or a bunch of sweaty palmed, basement-dwelling nerds with odd-shaped dice getting far too excited over Boris Vallejo prints?

D&D has had some pretty bad rap over the years, from the aforementioned accusation of extreme nerdiness to devil-worship, and D&D art is no different; ask anyone what a stereotypical piece of D&D artwork contains, and I'd lay good money that one of the first things mentioned would the eponymous 'chaimmail bikini', much to the lament of D&Ders everywhere.

Well, here's a collection of quality works that sum up D&D nicely (the original intent of the deviations may not have been to represent D&D, but I thought they fitted nicely with the theme of this article) with nary a busty bikini-clad elf nor an oiled up, overly muscled naked torso to be found; just a bunch of adventurers and their associated foes, tooled up and ready to go!

(Each of these deviations have been selected personally by me and deliberately have less than 200 favourites each)

If you wish to contribute to future D&D features (either your own work or someone else's - remember, Spread the Love!), then feel free to note me with your suggestions.

I hope you enjoy browsing this collection as much as I did gathering it and sharing it with you.

*Mistresselysia - A proud fan of D&D (who, despite this article, is guilty of indulging in the odd chainmail bikini-clad elf when the mood strikes her... ;))

This is what I still do!
Well, except for the "pretending to be a half-orc barbarian called Keith": I am a gnome tinker! :D

Funny. All the years I spent playing D&D and not once did I ever play as a chain-mailed bikini elf. What is WRONG with me ?!! :D

Thanks for the feature :D

:D

Hehee, we don't tend to have much luck with gnomes in my group - for some reason, they all tend of have a slightly masochistic/insame streak in them that gets them all killed off. It doesn't matter who plays them, they all end up doing something stupid...

*slaps hand* Bad! Everyone knows D&D is based upon the basic currency of the chainmail bikini-clad elf... :D

(Oddly enough, neither have I - I always used to look at them and think 'well, that's pretty, but it isn't exactly going to protect my supple, nubile body from that rampaging horde of slavering orcs over there, is it?!' )

:aww: You're welcome!

I think our last half-orc barbarian was called Grrrmmbf. Or something.

Not that it was me, but it was funny.

And yeah, that sounds like us, except for the beer. We're more for sugar than alcohol. (Grrrmmbf on a whole platter of high-sugar cookies was funny.)
