deviantART Presents: Critique!

$spyed:iconspyed: reports, April 17

Critiques and CriticsCritiques and Critics

Critique was designed to act as conduit between artists and art lovers that promotes creative discourse. It’s a two-way dialog that starts with artists requesting Critique on their deviations. From there, it’s up to the community to respond by writing and publishing fair, constructive critiques that will help artists develop their craft. Once a critique is submitted, it will immediately be published on the critic’s Profile Page. It’s also submitted to the artist, who may rate the Critique as "Fair" or "Unfair". Only critiques that are deemed "Fair" by artists will appear on the deviation page for the respective artwork. All deviantART members can voice their opinion by rating critiques.

Requesting CritiqueRequesting Critique

Artists may request Critique on new deviations during submission or on existing deviations by editing their settings. Once Critique is requested for a deviation, the community is notified in several ways, including:

  • The Critique module appearing on deviation pages
  • Via the deviantWATCH feed of all your watchers
  • The deviation appearing in a directory of artwork specifically requesting critique

When one of your deviations receives a critique, you will be notified in the Feedback section of your Message Center. The critique will not be automatically posted to your deviation page until you acknowledge that it is a "Fair" analysis of your work from within your Message Center. To enable critique on an existing deviation, click on the "edit deviation" link and select the request critiques checkbox, or visit http://my.deviantart.com/gallery to mass enable Critique on all your deviations.

Publish A Critique (Be A Critic)Publish A Critique (Be A Critic)

Critique isn’t just about helping artists, but is also a way for art enthusiasts and fans to participate in the creative process and develop their curatorial eye and art analysis skills. By submitting thoughtful, constructive critiques and searching out fresh talent and overlooked gems, you will gain respect as a critic while providing a valuable service to the community. When you submit a Critique on a deviation, several things happen:

  • The critique is immediately published to your Profile Page
  • Your watchers are notified via the CritiqueWATCH feed
  • The critique appears in a directory of newly published critiques
  • The critique appears on the corresponding deviation page (contingent upon approval of the artist)

DeviantART promotes a fair critique policy, and we’ve tried to build the system in a way to foster fair, balanced, constructive critiques. All members of deviantART have the ability to rate Critiques as either "Fair" or "Unfair" independently.

Critiques vs. CommentsCritiques vs. Comments

Critique does not replace the existing comments system, but is intended to augment and enhance feedback between artists and the community. Critiques are meant to be a sophisticated analysis of a work, and an important creative asset in their own right, just like a regular deviation. A critique must reference a deviation, but also lives on the critic’s Profile Page with a comment thread of its own as an independent entity. No changes have been made to comments.

Unlike a standard comment, critiques have minimum requirements in order to be published. Critiques must be a minimum of 100 words in length and the critic must also submit a 1-5 star rating on each of the following qualities that add up to an overall deviousness score:

  • Vision: How well does the artwork present or reflect a point of view, theme or idea?
  • Originality: Is the artwork fresh or new in its style, execution or approach? Is it something you haven’t seen before in its particular genre? Does it surprise you?
  • Technique: Was the artwork skillfully created? Does the artist exhibit advanced knowledge of the medium and/or bring special focus to the craft of the medium used?
  • Impact: Does the artwork resonate with you or evoke strong emotions? Does it make you think? Does it blow your mind?

What People Are Saying:What People Are Saying:

=evilsyndicatemember: "This is definitely one of the best things to hit deviantART. I really love this because not only does it promote the artist, but the critics as well. With both parties equally shared in the fame, it really does promote intelligent commenting and gives a chance for both parties to gain more watchers, assuming that both parties are in similar mediums of art. Keep it up you guys. Excellent work."

You know I helped with the beta testing and I didn't have any problems with it however I do have one question.

"recognition and regard as a critic"

How will the public know if a critic have a good reputation for being a good critic. Is there some kind of rating somewhere on our page that will show a tali of fair and unfair?

Not getting constructive critiques? Want to learn how to give better critiques? Then consider joining The Order of the Artists [link] a critique club focused on art education.
