How to Commission an Artist

*ArynChris:iconArynChris: reports, November 16
A comprehensive guide to commissioning, based on my personal experiences and observations. This guide does not address hosting contests, nor does it specifically address the unique challenges of commissioning through specific websites, though some typical scenarios are mentioned in passing. Topics include choosing the artist, why it's important to make sure you can afford it, how to contact the artist, payment, what WIPs are and why you might want to see them, and legal rights of both parties. Legal rights are discussed at the beginner level and are NOT in depth here.

Animals in Danger: Featuring Primates

=Flame-of-the-Phoenix:iconFlame-of-the-Phoenix: reports, April 20
:damphyr: [NOTE] It seems for every known artist on Deviantart, there are hundreds that are overlooked, many that are exceptionally talented. Some of them will be featured below; please, if you have the time check out their galleries and support them! :)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

:pointr: Hundreds of animals today are facing extinction: their homes are destroyed, they are slaughtered for their body parts or fur, and their food sources are lessening.

:pointr: One way to help these animals is by letting people know how bad the situation is and try to encourage people to support various groups trying to help out endangered animals. I decided to write a series of articles featuring some wonderful artists and their photographs or drawings of certain animals, some basic information on the condition of said animal in the wild, as well as some groups/clubs in case you want to get involved. Enjoy!

//Status levels (from worst to best)://
Extinct in wild, Critical risk, Endangered, Vulnerable, Lower Risk, Stable

:target: Featured: Primates

*I noticed primates are not very popular with some people, for whatever reason. I have to include myself in that category, unfortunately. Therefore, I decided to do this feature on some endangered primates, and hopefully this will help maybe change some people’s opinions a little. :aww: *

NOTE- This is not by any means the full list of endangered primates, and this does not include apes.

------------------------------------------------------

Central American Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri oerstedii)

:postit: Fast facts: - are very shy

- rarely descends to the ground, so any break in the forest, such as roads or electrical power lines, can severely fragment a troop's habitat.

- forage almost exclusively on branches between 1 - 2 cm (0.4 - 0.8") in diameter.

Status: :bulletorange: Endangered :bulletorange:
Due to: Deforestation, hunting, capture for the pet trade, insecticide spraying.

------------------------------------------------------

Golden Lion Tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia)

:postit: Fast facts: - have around a 12-inch long tail

- normally give birth to fraternal (not identical) twins.

- have claws instead of fingernails

Status: :bulletorange: Endangered :bulletorange:
Due to: Loss of habitat (less than 3% of the forest they originally inhabited is around today).

------------------------------------------------------

Japanese Macaque (Macaca fuscata)

:postit: Fast facts: - also known as snow monkeys

- are known to use the natural hot springs to keep warm during winter months

- are also known to wash their food before eating

Status: :bulletyellow: Vulnerable :bulletyellow:
Due to: Loss of habitat, killed by farmers because they are considered agricultural pests (they eat crops).

------------------------------------------------------

Ring-Tailed Lemur (Lemur catta)

:postit: Fast facts: - males often have "stink fights" in which they wave their tales (having been rubbed on the strong-smelling wrist gland) at one another.

- when territory or other disputes take place within a society, female lemurs always win.

- females carry their newborns in their mouths until the baby is able to cling to the fur on mother's stomach or back.

Status: :bulletorange: Endangered :bulletorange:
Due to: Loss of habitat, killed for food (bushmeat), captured for pet trade.

Now I will go back to faving all of the Lemur pictures. >>

You do a wonderful job on these articles! It's a shame that so many gorgeous and wonderful creatures are endangered but it's the little hints like this that people like you put out there that will help rebuild their populations.

Keep up the great work!!
