Interview with Chulii

=WCS-Wildcat:iconWCS-Wildcat: reports, April 22
Interview with *chulii

Julia Dresch is a inspiration for many of us. Her growing talent and skill in photography and has surely captivated many of us. Her photomanipulations and digital artworks always seem to tell a story

♦ What made you decide to join deviantART? Had you been creating much art in the past? How did it all begin for you? Also do you think dA and the support from your watchers and people who comment and critique are helping you improve and grow with your art?

A friend of mine told me about deviantART at the end of 2006. I was amazed about how many talented artists and beautiful works there were (and still are), and so I decided to join. About half a year later, I started being active. I uploaded my own photographs and tried myself in photomanipulating.
In the past I created different kind of art. First I wanted to be a fashion designer, because I love beautiful dresses and I love to sew. But as time keeps changing I experienced my love for digital art and that’s what I wanted to do until then.
Now the fact, that there are people out there, who are taking their time to look at and comment my works, is making me want to stay here and create even more art. Their support is what keeps me going, and of course helpful critique is always very welcome. I think the whole community helps me to grow and to be a better artist.

♦ Your photography work is really getting better and better. You capture so much emotion, softness detail and beauty in your models. What things can you tell us about your photos? Is there a specific mood or emotion which you try to capture in your pictures? What tips can you give to someone who is just starting to learn?

Thank you so much for these kind words. I really appreciate all the support, because photography means a lot to me. I love to take portraits of people, to show them how beautiful they are. When I take portraits, I always want to capture the person itself. At the beginning we discuss different ideas that would fit to the model and then we try to make it work. All my models have different styles and personality, and I think you can see that through my photos.
When you’re starting to take photos, ask your friends, if they want to model for you. Believe me, there are so many beautiful women out there, who are dreaming of being a model and would be really grateful. Then try to shoot from any possible angle. Get crazy and try all the things you want. But I can’t give you a guide of how to be a good photographer. Just be passionate about what you want to do.

♦ You do many beautiful photomanipulations with a some very sad feelings within them. Is this a sort of therapy to help release some of your own sorrows and emotions?

Usually I see myself as a really happy and lucky girl. In my photomanipulations I try to tell stories, and most of them aren't mine. But I want to tell stories that everyone can identify with. I get inspired by a lot of things, but for my manips it’s often the model stock. And when I see a beautiful photo, a story comes into my mind that I have to realise.

♦ Has critiques ever been a problem for you? I know some people can say some very harsh things where as other people can be at least helpful. How do you deal with people who leave harsh critiques or unwanted comments on your art or main page?

I have to admit, I never really got harsh comments on my art. But I had to read some hurtful things concerning my model stock and news features. In my opinion it's the best to ignore those people, I don't want them to bring me down. I really don't understand that somebody can write bad things about the creations of others. Critique is a good thing, and a community is here to help others. We are all artists, so we should see the beauty and effort in somebody else’s work.

♦ How serious do you plan to take your art? Will you be doing it as a career for money in the future or is this just a hobby? What other medias and things would you like to try and experiment with? What goals do you wish to achieve through your art?

Art is my everything. I need a creative work in my life to make it worth living. I studied media technology and design, and there I strengthened my passion for music videos. They just amaze me, because they combine music and visual elements. Both are things that I absolutely love! Through deviantART I got to know photomanipulations. And they led me back to photography, first because I wanted to take my own stock photos and use them in my art. And also because I love to take beautiful portraits of people (like musicians or fashion models). My dream would be to work as a photomanipulator, and to take all the photos for my art myself.

♦ Last, I wanted to ask you, is there anything in the deviantART community in which you would like to see it improve? Do you think the community could improve on daily deviations? The way we search and find resources and tutorials or simply the way we communicate? Is there anything you wish you could change or fix about dA and if so what would it be?

Oh there are many things I’d like to improve about dA. It would be really helpful, if dA would support clubs and create special features for them. It would also be much easier, if we could upload more images at once, f.e. for stock photos. But mostly I would want members to be more helpful. As a community we should be here and share different techniques, we should learn from each other. Unfortunately a lot of people aren’t willing to share their secrets or they are to busy to answer questions. But thanks to some lovely members, it keeps changing to a better place now. :aww:
