ProjectComment Anthro Features- October 2009

=MachinesBleedToo:iconMachinesBleedToo: reports, November 1
As a Staff member at *ProjectComment, it is my duty to seek out Deviations one week or older with 0-5 original comments. I am in charge of the Anthro category.

These choices are forwarded onto the admins and then featured in a news article to help give a wider audience to these under-appreciated artists by exposing them to a group of people willing to leave original comments.

An original comment is not something like: "cool", "I like it" or "nice."

You can help too. Drop a constructive, thought out comment on these artworks if you find the time. It would be greatly appreciated by both parties!

Within this article are my feature picks for this month.

The History & True Definition of the Furry Fandom

^Katmomma:iconKatmomma: reports, October 13
This article is the most all inclusive, accurate, and informational resource for every question you have about the Furry Fandom. It Provides a complete chronology of Anthropomorphic Characters & Concepts throughout history, And CLEARLY Defines what this "fandom" is all about.

Before you read this little blurb I'm writing and think to yourself "Why do I care? Furries are weird people" Reconsider your thinking. If you enjoyed Disney films and Old-skool cartoons to any degree, then you share an interest with millions of people world wide. You don't have to be obsessed. You don't have to be attracted to a Vixen built like a brick house. You don't have to draw talking animals.........

all you have to do is appreciate animals, objects, or natural phenomena that can relate to you, emotionally, behaviorally, and to some degree, physically.

Obviously there will be people who prefer not to be labeled. But please make sure you have read what the entire article presents before you take offense to this. Because really if you've truly read it, there is no reason to.

A very interesting read for anyone who has doubts or concerns. Highly educational and you'll get a history lesson too. ;) Check it out!

Much appreciation goes to the author of this Document. I did not write this, and the article does not reflect my opinion. But there is a lot of good useful info in there that will get you thinking.

Furcadian Port Artists on dA Unite!

*rlmiller:iconrlmiller: reports, April 23
The last article which prefaces what a Furcadia portrait is and why they should be recognized as an art: [link]

=Pixel-Spotlight's wonderful journal entry about dA policy: [link]

So many people have been vocal about dA's policies concerning Furcadia portraits. However, many need to remember this is a two way road and an established website like deviantArt isn't going to sway for an art style that makes up less than 1% of all the art collected on the site.

Portrait artists on Furcadia are searching for validation in the art world, that the work we put into these mini masterpieces is just as legitimate as work put into any other kind of pixel work. In fact, for those using just .FSH Editor, it's harder! We receive the greatest restrictions and work with the greatest risks. In order to attract attention, we upload a protected image onto deviantArt because in Furcadia, people tend to steal portraits not intended for them.

This wouldn't be such a big deal if everyone was nice and sweet and honest, but the world doesn't function like that.

However, for deviantArt, to have these jpeg'd and watermarked pixel works in a pixel gallery is completely unappealing. It's like taking the sharp, colorful look of pixels and watering them down with milky water. For display purposes, having portraits in the Pixel Art category really doesn't work out.

The avatars category doesn't quite seem right either, because avatars are those stupid flashy icons people use on Livejournal to show people their exact emotions at that exact time.

Wrong.

Avatars themselves are their own art. They can be displayed in jpeg, png, gif, anything you can think of. They are similar to the size of a port, and many of them are pixeled themselves.

What I'm trying to say is, it's our responsibility as Furcadian artists to represent ourselves well in the community. Fighting and bickering just makes us look whiney and bratty. We need to consolidate our efforts and upload our ports in the proper place. As soon as I finish writing this article, I'm putting all my ports in the following category:

Desktop & Customization > Icons > Avatars > Miscellaneous

By doing this, we are solidifying our efforts to promote our work to the community. And maybe, just maybe if we get them all in one place, dA will see what a great portion of the community we are and that we deserve proper recognition. Please don't let the awesome efforts of =Pixel-Spotlight go in vain!

Why do it scientifically and then abandon?
Because then it becomes art.

Good stuff, going in my favourite news for sure. <3

However, I'm honestly a little unsure of why portraits ought to be submitted to Avatars > Miscellaneous. I guess I don't understand what's going on entirely.

My portraits, which are not JPEG'd, have been put in the Digital Art > Pixel Art > Characters > Non-Isometric category. Should I be changing this? My latest portrait has been JPEG'd, but then saved again as a PNG. When I upload it, should this be put in Avatars?

Thanks for the clarification, I'm just a little confused is all. x3;

:iconrlmiller:
Hey! Thanks for the question. :) I think it's a great point to bring up. I'm not trying to force anyone to do anything, but yes I think it would be a good idea to move your deviations to the Icons/Avatars category because that's what dA views them as. We see them as pixel art because we obviously use pixels to construct them. But our definition and dA's definition differs greatly. Just trying to consolidate everyone's effort into one specific place because as of now there isn't one specific category anyone uses consistantly.

Hell, people sometimes even load them as oekaki. But if we all go to Icons, we can find them all in one place.

WOOHOO what I fudged up was actually right?! xD I've been submitting them there for a while, I hope more people start doing it now too. Bravo.
:iconmckaelakaiyou:
Ah, that makes sense then. <3 I'll definitely be moving my portraits, it'll just take some getting used to when submitting them from now on. xD

Thanks for answering. <333
