Every couple of years (art) photographers see something they like, try to copy it and achieve the same attention as the item they'd seen and attempted to replicate. One thing we should all keep an open mind about is that those original shots were always formed from someone's original idea (of course sometimes an idea is thought up by lots of people turning the concept into something traditionally enjoyable).

I notice a lot of similar "Popular Deviations" and I myself was encouraged to try to capture something similar to see how people like it. I flopped though, along with hundreds of other users which makes me feel bad like what I did wasn't good enough.

Well I think it's time we start appreciating the differences rather then the similarities. When it comes to viewing art look at the ones that you question, look at the ones that make you think, look at the ones that remind you of a memory, look at the ones that you've never seen before, look at the ones that you don't necessary like at first glance. Appreciate them all equally and explore a gallery of possibilities and connections on Deviantart.com, After all there are thousands of users with hundreds of submissions and millions of art pieces that you can enjoy.
