Unknown Actions

Firstly, what is an action?

An action is a series of commands played back on a single file. [As defined by =AhmedGalal] Actions are simply a means to record all the commands used to generate an effect in Photoshop for re-application later.1 They basically do some photo editing for you, using colour variations, levels, unusual textures, lighting etc. There are so many different types of actions, including sepia, black and white, tones, vintage style, retro style and so many more. Each individual action creates a different effect.

You will need Photoshop of some kind to use them.

Action Artist Interview

With Sarah-Jane
`love4art

:iconlove4art:

:bulletpurple: What got you into actions?

"When I was younger, I was always fascinated by the different colours people used in their photography, I aspired to create colours in my own style. I stumbled upon `larafairie's gallery and was inspired to do a unique color effect to my photographs.
I was new to making actions, so I browsed upon dA and other websites, but I was disappointed to see some people charged money for their actions. The fact that I couldn't afford to buy actions, and that many other people couldn't either, pushed me further to create my own sets of actions for free!"

:bulletpurple: When was your first trail action?

"I experimented a lot with different colours, I made a "Retro Pop" theme with bright colours, they were very powerful on photographs so I didn't release it and just used it for myself. After a few failed attempts, I began to practice after school and I made many Vintage Actions that were a success on DA. They now have over 21,000 views and over 11,000 downloads, it is still a shock to me now!"

:bulletpurple: Are they difficult to make?

"If you're new to Photoshop and actions, then they might be a little tricky to get right. Something to remember when making actions is that it must apply to other people's photographs, so if you make one, your photograph should be large resolution, and then work from there. If you use a tiny photograph, it won't work very well on other people's photographs. Sometimes when you make them, they can be overbearing or not enough colour, but it's all about practice and getting it right over time. It might take me 2 to 3 days to make my best action."

:bulletpurple: Where do you get your ideas for an action from?

"Well, I have always been interested in Vintage styles, especially for my own gallery. This is where my ideas came from. A lot of people asked me to give them information about creating these vintage colours, and suddenly it occurred to me that I should make a few for people rather than explaining it. Actions do all the work for you!"

:bulletpurple: Any additional comments?

"I really hope that people create more free actions for those who can't afford the expensive ones. It is a fantastic feeling receiving lovely feedback and it encourages you to do more. Good luck to everyone who are enthused to make actions!

Thank you, `love4art !

Actions That I Found Particularly Good
Not necessarily under a 100 :+fav:'s

:star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

This is the first action that I ever used. It was really easy, simple and neat and gave an amazing vintage effect. It made my photograph look great in a matter of seconds. And if I didn't think the warm tones or high contrast didn't suit, then I'd also add a few of my own variations, or go back a few steps. I'd recommend this for any deviant, beginner or experienced.

Note: If you do this on this one particular, please make sure you :+fav: the original deviation and leave feedback.

:star: :star: :star: :star:

This action offers a diverse range of effects and tones. It had five in one convenient download, and that meant more variations. I liked it because it didn't make my photos look cheap, unlike a lot of actions out there. I had a lot of fun playing around with them, occasionally adding my own effects.

Note: If you do this on this one particular, the artist wants credit for the original action

Here are some fantastic overlooked actions that have less than 100 :+fav:s. Go check them out!
