Out of all of the TV shows, comics and games around, Sonic the Hedgehog seems to have the most fan characters of any other rivaling franchise. A main reason for there being so many is because of one overlooking fact:

-Sonic is one of those franchises that has so many characters in a certain amount of space, that it's incredibly easy for people to make up a character, and then easily put it in with the others, since there isn't a strict (or at least apparently not strict enough) setting and plot; this allows easy access to millions of OC's being made. In other words with the way that there are so many comics, shows and god knows how many games on said blue hedgehog, people can easily take one of the already made animals, alter it to mirror they're personality or whatever, and boom, you have a Sonic OC in ten seconds.

The problem is that because it's so easy, more than half of the overwhelming population of Sonic OC's are simply recolors, or "Mary-Sues". Tis they that lack all creativity whatsoever.

I think there's a line between having a Mary-Sue/recolor and a genuine good OC. One of the main things is a solid background story. Having a picture off Google of Sonic from Sonic X, coloring it green in paint, calling him Lightning the Hedgehog and slapping it up somewhere without a back story is pathetic. But I think when you SHOW a decent background for than green recolor that makes sense and is well thought it, it's much better than the first scenario.

I myself have several Sonic OC's, so I'm not taking sides on much of this; I simply wanted to throw this out there and hear other people's opinions of this subject. What are your thoughts?
