Heres 10 helpful hints to help you on your way to becoming a Pokemon Mast...I mean internet popular.
1. Its About Respect, Bro
You can either win over the internet by being a self-important megalomaniac, or by being a self-loathing jack-ass-in-the-box. The point is to convince everyone that theres something that makes you better than the average deviant, and, of course, be able to back it up.
Personally I don't like trolling that much, except when they started it; so I'm in the first camp.
2. You Talking To Me?
Be somebody. Be somebody people can remember. If something starts to work for you, stick with it.
I'm a Cannibal, and everyone knows about the Ninja, the Alien, the Witch, the Wombat, the Clown and the Angry-Invisible-Man-Who-Is-Now-A-Skeleton-Instead. Nobody knows who "Regular Shmuck Who Draws Nothing But Vampires And Dragons" is, and they never will.
Even Snapesnogger got (more) famous for drawing Nagas, simply because they deviated from the norm of most fantasy artists.
3. Fly Like A Hummingbird, Pollinate Like An Elephant In Heat
Be everywhere. The forums, the chatrooms, other popular websites, other popular deviants pages. Make powerful friends and watch them whore you like the only wet flannel at an open-invite all-you-can-eat-buffet. Make alternate accounts, trick people into viewing your page, leave those "Thanks for the fav" notes on peoples pages - just get in there.
Anyone who goes on 4chan has probably seen my work there - a little over half the time, its me who posted it. Any other times it pops up and I see it, I'm very flattered.
4. A Friend Is Still A Customer
Why did I ever want to get dA famous? Because I saw it as a chance to do what I wanted with my life later on, thats why. Wether you like the label or not, many of the people who watch me are potential customers next time I get something published. Keep that in mind next time you want to shove a cork down one of your watchers throats.
Oh, the shit I've put up with.
Funnily enough once I meet people in real life I completely forget that they're actual fans of my work who've been watching me for years. Its weird when they talk about me in such high regard, because I honestly treat them as equals.
5. Why Sell Nothing?
It leaves me as a total hypocrite saying so, but make something! Quality and Quantity aren't enemies when you're an artist, they're comrades in arms, shooting squirrels and drinking beer. If you're not posting new art, nobody has a reason to watch you. Lots of really good artists lost my watch because they posted nothing for a long time.
6. And This Is Where The Stupid Replies Begin
Fanart. I don't care if you like it or not, its a tool. Use it, make it your own, and notice the results. Fanart doesn't have to be a cheap bastardization of someone elses work - it can be good. And you can make it good.
People aren't typing in "Your OC" or "That Poem You Wrote Last Winter" into the dA search, they're typing "Naruto Fighting Sonic" or "Supa Smesh Bruthers". I even add popular misspellings like that into my keywords if theres room, just to snag even the dumbest of the dumb.
And back to an old subject, fanart is the only time you should say "Thanks for the fav on [link]", and link it back to the image. Otherwise you'll look more like a twat, and have less attention to show for it.
7. Versatility Versus Specialty
Make lots of things in the same genre. People dig it when you've got a thing going. But try other stuff too.
Don't be the kind of fat retard who makes a song one day, a CG animation the next day, a flash movie the next day, draws his girlfriends breasts starting at the chin the next day, and finishes off with a crappy self portrait done in a completely different style and paint program the next. You'll never get anywhere being that all-over-the-place.
8. Tip From The Top : Stats Mean Nothing
Yeah yeah, you always hear it from the guy with all the page views; after you've tried "so hard" and ended up with none.
I like stats because they help me set goals. Right now I want a million page views, and I'm way behind schedule.
Does that mean I actually care about those million page views? Not bloody likely. I've got no reason to Lord that over anyone, unless they do that whole "You think you're so cool, Murk; I'm so bitter; sob sob sob" act.
Don't count them one by one, just let them motivate you to do better.
9. Your Page Is A Place, Not A Person
Give people a reason to visit. Your gallery is like a TV. Your journal is like a sofa. Those "Add This List To Your Journal" journals are popular because the other person gets involved. Any journal where you ask for a personal response will get a much bigger reaction than "Oh blah blah, I did this today, and I secretly don't care what you think."
10. Reply Button, Do You Speak It?
Just reply to people. I get so many comments like "Wow, I can't believe someone so popular made time for me", and I find it more sad than I do flattering. That said, I do understand why really popular people just can't - its hard work, especially when its so many of the same comment over and over. But people do appreciate their efforts to talk to you acknowledged.
And that is all. Now you can go be internet famous. I should probably work a bit harder on it too

"Film-making, like sex, isn't a polite enterprise. It involves a lot of mess, sweat and tears, and the bottom line is, if somebody ain't screaming, you're not doing your job." -James Woods
My gallery is very varied - which might explain why my pageviews went down considerably when I started doing less fanart and more of my own work. My most popular days were when I did Xiaolin Showdown fanart...and most 12 year olds that watched me then simply wanted more Jack Spicer fanart, not MY work. It kinda annoys me, but at least you can see who is really interested in your work for what it is, rather than just to see you draw someone elses character....
I'm not saying fanart is bad though - I love the stuff. I love it when people draw their favourite character in their own style, with their own colours etc....but you can't make a living through it, which is why you need your own brain children too.
