It's been twenty years, to the day, since the first democratic general elections in Poland since the 1930s. On the 4th of June, 1989, the people of Poland went to the polling stations and for the first time in over half a century truly had their say, without the fear of being persecuted, or the results being rigged.

Poland had always been the hub of revolution in the Soviet block, with protests of Polish workers inspiring others to follow their lead from as early as 1956, when brave souls in Hungary, inspired by whispers and rumours of what had happened in Poznań earlier that year, stood up against their oppressors.

A country with a history criss-crossed with blood, occupation, exhilaration and revolution, it's easy to understand many traits that make Poland and Poles what they are today. Poland's soul has always lain in that of the Polish people - stubborn, proud, sometimes pig-headed, but always up for a laugh, a drink, and always true to themselves.

And now, a selection of deviations celebrating this beautiful, if puzzling country.
