In the fall of 2007, our fellow deviant was in a car accident. Injuries from the accident resulted in a stroke which left Sara with locked-in syndrome, a rare condition in which she could feel her whole body but was paralyzed from the neck down.

As tough as this was for Sara, she continued to gain strength while she was in the hospital for 11 months. In the fall of 2008 Sara moved back home with her care being provided mainly by her mother with a support staff of home nurses, friends and family. Around that same time, we announced a fundraiser to raise money so Sara's family would be able to purchase a computer interface called Brainfingers to help Sara communicate as she was unable to speak.

Together, deviantART members and friends raised over $2400 for the Sara Baker Trust Fund in less than two weeks! It was incredible!

Today I bring to you more GREAT NEWS about another big milestone for Sara!
After over a year and a half, they have finally removed her tracheotomy! This is BIG! HUGE! Sara is now breathing totally on her own and with time, she will likely be able to regain her ability to speak.
