So i herd u liek interviews?? - Mr-Jaunty

`Synfull:iconSynfull: reports, June 24
:bulletred:Intro:bulletred:

Welcome to June's edition of So i herd u liek interviews??. This is the 12th volume in a series of interviews aimed at finding out about emoticonists from the deviantART community.

This series links with the weekly volumes of 'so i herd u liek emotes??' which have now been running since October.

:bulletgreen:The emoticonist:bulletgreen:

This volumes featured emoticonists is =Mr-Jaunty. Although he has only been around for a short time, he has already made a name for himself in the emote community. His emotes are spread over a number accounts, but all shine with unique but interesting ideas are always created to a high standard. He is commonly known for his great Lunatic Spatula comic strips, as well as brilliant emoticons such as Emote Scanner I managed to grab some time with him to have this interview

:bulletblue:The interview:bulletblue:

How and when did you get into making emoticons?

I got into emote about a year ago and solely because I saw and wanted to make cute little round things.

When you first started making emotes, did you use any tutorials?

No, I've always preferred to figure things out on my own.

Are there any particular tutorials you have found/created since that you would like to suggest?

I don't recommend the tutorial I made... Seriously... it was horrible. Other than that I've never used tutorials, so I wouldn't know of any good ones.

Where do you get inspiration / ideas from?

Just about anything, today I made an emote from a typo.

Do you try to stick to one particular style and technique, or do you prefer to experiment?

I do like to try new styles, but overall I tend to stick to the one.

What methods have you used for shading? Do you have a preference?

I hand pixel everything, and I love that, but in the past I would use a brush, but never a gradient.

Which programs have you used to create your emoticons? Are there any you can suggest?

Photoshop CS2 and ImageReady... I refuse to update! :shakefist:

Roughly how long does it take you to go from concept to finished emoticon?

Anywhere from ten seconds to twelve hours, depending on what said concept is. Anything that takes longer than twelve hours tends to get forgotten.

Are there any particular qualities that you feel can make an emote stand out from any other?

Attention to detail, a daring to try new things and, most importantly, love. You have to love your emotes, elsewise they turn on you and bite you in your sleep.

Are there any particular effects you've found difficult, or have been unable to create?

Glowing. Can't do it.

Which are 3 of your favourite emotes from your personal gallery?

This is my all time favorite of my emotes, nothing I've made since has come close to the awesomeness or concept of it.

This has quickly become one of the emotes I use the most. Which is saying something because the expression was a complete accident.

The time put into this and all the little details... Let's face it, it's just too cute.

Is there a particular emote in your gallery you would you like to see get more attention. If so, why?

It was not fun making all those mouths. :bucktooth:

Are there any particular emoticonists you would like to see get more exposure?

=BlissfullySarcastic and =ahollowvoice / ~RooBot

How did you come up with your emoticon character?

I came up with Punkat before I even knew what an emote character was, and he was basically a revamp of :fuzzydemon: that I fell in love with. Mr. Jaunty came around after I got a felt top hat as a Christmas present... I still wear it. :paranoid:

Do you feel like the emoticon gallery has progressed during your time as an emoticonist?

Oh definitely. More so in the last five months than the seven months before that, but even during those early years things were always changing, getting better, smoother... more insane.

Where would you like to see emotes go in the future?

Holograms, virtual pets and maybe one of those scientist people could make the first ever real emote...

Are there any trends or styles you'd like to see less of in the gallery?

Caramelldansen and pictures of people.

Is there any advice you would like to give to new emoticonists?

Practice, you won't get better if you don't and you'll thank yourself later if you do.

Is there anything else you would like to say?

Uhm... Banana hammock?

If :| and :B were locked in a room with nothing but an umbrella and a pie, what would happen?

:| would likely drive :bucktooth: insane with his silence, thus resulting in who would eat the entire pie and then run around the room with the umbrella trailing behind it, all this while :| just sat there and stared blankly.

:bulletpurple:Features:bulletpurple:

Jetpackeer must be one of my favourite deviations by =Mr-Jaunty. He combines a unique and amusing idea which amazing technical skill and great comic timing to create a jaw-droppingly good emoticon

Stretched out is another emoticon in his galleries that really stands out. The amazing shading is really appealing and the expressions chosen are perfectly used. The odd angle works well within the situation and the pixelling of emote is top notch throughout

With the recent release of the next game, I really couldn’t resist featuring :sims:. The animation is fluent throughout and the idea is executed extremely well.

For all his emotes, be sure to check out his other accounts:
