The Harry Potter FanArt contest has gone to Broadway and the results could be amazing. With "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" coming soon to theatres and a remarkable Harry Potter Musical rampant on YouTube, this contest should round out your summer of fandom. I have received permission from Caius Marcius, the founder of Harry Potter Filks and we have agreed to hold a contest to create illustrations for the "filks" and "musicals" on this site.
[link] This contest focuses on the five full-length musicals adapted by filker JustLivePosthumously (coincidence...) There will be five categories, one for each of the five musicals/books in the series and a general category. The contest is explained below and in Demodocus' journal.

June 13 - July 31

A specific entry may only be allowed in one category, but an artist

from outside Deviant Art to your profile beneath your illustration

The categories/themes:
Each category includes a link to the filked musical, a description of a possible idea, and links to photos, posters, etc. The prompt is not the only option for entering the contest, but gives some examples of connections, styles, and things to consider. The underlying principle is too get into the musicals (original and filked) and find some connections that will work.

Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone -- "Potter! The Musical" by JLP adapted from "Oliver!" by Lionel Bart
[link] --Oliver Twist and Harry Potter have the obvious connection as orphans subject to cruel masters, villians, and friends. The movie posters tend to have several characters surrounding Oliver in little circles. This layout would work well for Harry Potter as well.

Chamber of Secrets -- "The Chamber Man" by JLP adapted from "The Music Man" by Meredith Wilson
[link] -- Notice the similarities between the book cover
[link] and this Broadway poster.
[link] Marian and Prof. Hill could be replaced with Harry and Ginny riding Fawkes the phoenix. The style should be cartoonish and simply drawn. If you'd like to have the smooth-talking Lockhart lead a Shi-poo-pi number or a marching band, go right ahead!
[link]
Prisoner of Azkaban -- "My Fair Harry" by JLP adapted from "My Fair Lady" by Lerner/Loewe
[link] --This one is wide open. I think that dressing Hermione up in Liza's amazing Black/White dress while Ron look on like Henry Higgins would be nice.
[link] Or perhaps Trelawney could be pulling the strings like the Original Cast Recording.
[link]
Goblet of Fire "Harry, Get Your Wand" adpated from "Annie, Get Your Gun" by Irving Berlin
[link] --Notice the potential similarities between the book cover
[link] and the 1999 Revival Cover
[link] if Annie is replaced with Harry, Fleur, Viktor, and Cedric with wands loaded and ready. Instead of a target, the maze could dominate the background. Think Western and competition for this one.

Order of the Phoenix -- "Crazy, But True" adapted from "Crazy For You" an arragement of Gershwin songs
[link] --This musical is very jazzy with a lot of tap dancing. Any grouping of Potterized jazz dancers/tappers would be fun. You could spoof the original cover and logo
[link] The filked musical centers on the Ministry of Magic's cover-up. The Daily Prophet would have plenty of illustrations to offer! Anything in newsprint, like the movie credits, would be nice. For example, these photos
[link] [link] show Bobby, the main character, but could be replaced with Minister Fudge, Umbridge, and Rita Skeeter surrounded by scantily clad secretaries with telephones. The headlines could use phrases from the musical like "Can't Be Bothered Now" or "Working For the Ministr-easy!" There is a lot of propaganda potential in this late Twenties, early Depression-era musical setting.

General
--Art based on other content from Harry Potter filks or other work that combines the elements of Broadway and Harry Potter but doesn't fit a specific novel or category.

I encourage you to become familiar with the filked musicals, pick up on lines, interesting character combinations, etc. For some inspriations, a list of current illustrations on the site is here.
[link]The judging criteria:

The themes should be carefully considered in light of the orginal cover art and posters of the Broadway shows and the cover art of Rowling's novels. This includes layout, style, colour, characters, lettering. The goal is to parody the originals by combining elements from the book and the filked musical.

Myself and Caius Marcius will be the principle judges because Caius determines the content of his website and I will choose what I feel embodies the prompts. The "General" category will be judged by a panel that includes myself
