How to Commission an Artist

*ArynChris:iconArynChris: reports, November 16
A comprehensive guide to commissioning, based on my personal experiences and observations. This guide does not address hosting contests, nor does it specifically address the unique challenges of commissioning through specific websites, though some typical scenarios are mentioned in passing. Topics include choosing the artist, why it's important to make sure you can afford it, how to contact the artist, payment, what WIPs are and why you might want to see them, and legal rights of both parties. Legal rights are discussed at the beginner level and are NOT in depth here.

Misunderstood: The True Story of "Scary" Animals

=Flame-of-the-Phoenix:iconFlame-of-the-Phoenix: reports, June 26
:fear: [NOTE] It seems for every known artist on Deviantart, there are hundreds that are overlooked, many that are exceptionally talented. Some of them will be featured below; please, if you have the time check out their galleries and support them! :)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

:pointr: Many times, animals get a raw deal. For all the pampered pets out there, there are whole species of animals that are looked down upon as pests. Whether they eat the plants in the garden, hide in your chimney, or induce fear in anyone who sees them, these animals can be hated. But do you know the true story about them?

:pointr: So begins the stories of the misunderstood animals. Read on to learn a more about them and hopefully gain a little bit more appreciation for them. :aww:

:target: Topic: RUUNNNN!!!

------------------------------------------------------

What it could be: Mountain Lion (also known as puma or cougar)

Why it scares people: Some have been known to attack humans (usually hikers that go into their territory).

The other side of things: The list of attacks of mountain lions in recent years-
1990-2000: 8 fatal attacks.
2001-2008: 4 fatal attacks.

- “In all of North America over the last 112 years there are only about 100 documented cases of cougars attacking people, with 17 deaths resulting from the attacks.”

- “Dr. Beier studied a population of cougars in Southern California. He determined that 70-90% of reports of cougars along the urban/rural interface were false sightings.”

Some fun facts: - Mountain lions can jump 18 feet (5.5 meters) from the ground into a tree, and they have been known to jump 20 feet (6.1 meters) up or down a hillside.

- Even though we hear it a lot in movies and on TV, mountain lions don’t make that "wild cat scream" very often.

What it could be: Rattlesnake

Why it scares people: It’s a snake… plus they are venomous.

The other side of things: They help control rodent populations (that are known to spread some diseases).

Some fun facts: - A rattlesnake can detect prey that are as little as 1/10 of a degree warmer than their background.

- Future generations use the same den that their parents have, for hibernating—some have been used for over 100 years.

What it could be: Shark

Why it scares people: Ever since movies like Jaws were created, people are even more afraid of shark attacks.

The other side of things: Here are the statistics for shark attacks over the past few years (keep in mind, the numbers are for attacks worldwide.)

2006: 4 fatal, 58 non-fatal, 62 overall
2007: 1 fatal, 70 non-fatal, 71 overall
2008: 4 fatal, 55 non-fatal, 59 overall

- “The average person has only about 1 chance in 300 million of being killed by a shark.”

Some fun facts: - Sharks have advanced and potent immune systems that can fight off many kinds of infection and even cancerous tumors: this information can potentially help humans in the future.

- Some species, including the notorious great white shark, are in danger of being hunted to extinction.

What it could be: Wolf

Why it scares people: Depictions of scary wolves in movies, TV shows, mythology, and even fairy tales (such as Little Red Riding Hood) have caused people to believe that wolves are monsters. Also, a few have attacked people, and some kill off livestock.

The other side of things: They keep the deer/elk populations in check (without doing this, deer will eat all the vegetation in an area). Also, they are responsible for less than 1% of all livestock kills.

- “There is no record of a healthy wolf ever eating a human being.”

Some fun facts: - Wolves can also travel far from their home pack and their regular territory in search of food—sometimes hundreds of miles (kilometers).

- Wolves love to play when they have the chance. They start with a play bow and have been seen tossing "toys" to each other like bones, branches, or animal skins.

:iconavalik:
Nice job, I really like your features on these. You need to do one on spiders cause those are pretty much the only animals that freak me out.

A bonus on the cougar and wolf ones; they both generally only attack humans if they are emaciated coupled with a tolerance to humans (i.e. feeding directly or indirectly) or if they are being chased/harassed.

No known verified wolf attack was done by a healthy wolf who had not developed a tolerence to humans, or who had was faced with a human who was threatening them.
