Getting popular on deviantArt directly effects me in the real world, because I'm always meeting new people who have seen my work. Its a networking tool, and I'll keep finding ways to use it more effectively. If I'd put all that effort into stat-buffing a Tauren Shaman, I'd still only be another Tauren Shaman. A buff one.
2. Time Management, Not Time Envelopment
Sure, I use dA a lot. Like, A LOT. But if I need to be somewhere else, I will be. With an MMO the addiction starts taking non-negotiable chunks of time, which leads to conflicts of interest. "Hey dude, don't bail out on us, we have a 5 man heroic to do to unlock our final achievement and a pet piglet for each of us!" - is your final exam paper really worth that sentence?
3. Guidance Is About Decision Making For Two
Would you rather help someone become addicted to being a possibly-but-no-guarantees successful, real-life artist; or help them to be a Paladin with a Greater Sword of Troll Castration?
No, wrong choice. Think harder.
4. Internet Highway Robbery
Annoying people on dA say a nasty comment or two and then leave, get blocked if you're a fag, or get banned. Annoying people on MMOs kill you, loot your corpse, murder your pretend wife, set you back hours of progress, and generally ruin your day. You can get over words, but you can't get over someone stealing valued time from you.
5. Artfags vs. Roleplay Fags
The drama is just better on dA, if you're into that kind of thing. I know I couldn't give a damn.
Better yet, go to 4chan and say you're from deviantArt. They'll love you for it.
