Childrens Illustrator Presents: Chitchatting with ploop26!
Hello and welcome to our interview room! Can you tell us who you are in a nutshell ? Where do you come from, what's your work, and what's your shoe size ?
Hello, I am, in two words, Nicolas Gouny. I'm a french illustrator living in a very, very small hamlet in the center of France, among cows, birds and fields, near a river.
I've made some books, but I also designed jewelery and draw for game publishers, advertisement, common people... I try to keep fancy in my works, and I am fond of extraordinary colors.
And my shoe size is 7, that's what is written inside my doc's martens
What mediums do you work with, and why those ?I learned all by myself, so I don't really know how to draw with my hands, that's why I choose to work with digital media.
But, recently, I've tried to make things with real pencil and pastels. I would love to use more collages in my work, too.

Tell us about your creation process: what turns you on, what gets you mad, what brings you into the divine state of inspiration... We want to know everything! My state of inspiration is never divine.
I only follow my imagination and mind, and not an "intellectual" process. I let ideas come to me (and they do come).
When I was younger, I used to admired dadaist poets. I quite liked being different, to feel and to think different. I try to keep being this way and to keep thinking like this nowadays.

Do you ever get stuck in front of the famous "blank page/canvas" ? How do you move forward?I do not know about that. I just start, and that is all.
We all have various inspirations that may come from music or sounds, art, food, whatever... What are yours?Music, most of the time, and tiny things, the movement of a body, the color of a leaf, a smell in the wind, a bird's song...

Do you remember, as a child, what books or graphic style you liked most? No. Unfortunately, I do not remember a lot about my childhood. And I'm really scared about that.
Did you read much?I used to read a lot when I was younger, but it became harder to find time and patience. I read a lot with my children now. I read a lot of comics and three or five novels or "serious" books per month.

Why did you choose to illustrate for children ? And what advice would you give to beginners who are willing to go for it?I do not think about that. I just illustrate and draw, that's all. I do have two advices for beginners: work and trust.
At the moment, are you working on a particular project?I just finished a long work with the school children of my town. It was fun, fresh and enriching. I am working on few books, written by me or by other author. I try to keep the projects one by one, I do not like to not finish them.

It's time for our pot-pourri questions ! Favourite color, favourite movie, favourite food, favourite word, favourite sound ?Favourite color : it changes from time to time ; at the moment, the alternative greens.
Favourite movie : I felt in love with Une partie de campagne, byJean Renoir ([link]) and of the actress, Sylvia Bataille.
Favourite food : I really have no idea.
Favourite word : "Merde" ("shit"), I guess.
Favourite sound : the song of the cuckold.

And that's it! Thank you so much, *
ploop26 for spending a little time with us. Take care of your child's dreams and keep playing with your witches and fairies
