Printmaking Series Two - Intaglio Printing II

^stigmatattoo:iconstigmatattoo: reports, July 12
Printmaking produces images with visual qualities that are very different from those obtained through drawing or painting directly, and each technique adds its own peculiarities to the way each piece is conceived. However, with its odd and alchemical combinations of unusual materials, specific tools and enormous machines, Printmaking is often a strange and foreign territory even for artists accustomed to studio work on other disciplines.

Watercolor art can be hard to find on DA, since the medium lacks its own designated section. Here’s a sampling of some of the best watercolors I’ve found on this site.

Featured Indyart Deviation of the Day Oct 10th

`jezebel:iconjezebel: reports, October 9, 2002
While casually browsing through the zillions of IndyArt submissions today, my eyes were widened by this little gem. Cateyes by ~timmok is just beautiful. The fluid linework and smooth shading won me over quick. I'm shocked that this wonderful pencil artist hasn't received more recognition, so I felt an overwhelming need to submerge the community in this new talent. Enjoy!

Sure... I'll consider requests. ^_^

And man, I LOVE sketches. I'm always so impressed by a person that can bring life to a boring sheet of paper in a few subtle strokes. That takes some skill. :) (Smile)

n05feratu... You just need to impress me is all. But beware - that's no easy task. I sifted through about 3,000 pictures yesterday and found only a small handful (around 20) that I thought were good for features. Mind you I'm trying to select art that not many people have seen, or things by artists that aren't top favs everyday. That's about 1%. I'm a nasty old crone, aren't I?

LOL

Things I look for (not all of these things at once, just have at least one or two):

1. Well-developed anatomy
2. Good range of values
3. Solid linework
4. Nice use of color (or lack thereof)
5. Creativity/originality
6. Effort

Things that turn me off from selecting an image:

1. Small image size, bad compression, bad scan
2. Jagged, uncontrolled linework
3. Obviously smudged photographs
4. Poor use of filters, or overuse of the dodge/burn tools

Suggestions from me if you want to make a "feature":

1. Spend time on your piece. If you scribbled something into your notebook during mathclass with little care, then its probably not the best you can do. Put forth some extra effort and clean up those pieces, redraw them or just paint something new. The time you put into a piece of art really shows through, I promise.
2. Make the background of your piece in the same or similar style of your foreground. It looks odd to see a picture sketched onto notebook paper, scanned in and then placed on top of a photograph. ;) (Wink)
3. Look at someone else's art that you love. Look at it and really study it. What makes it look good to you? Look at your own work. Where is yours lacking? If you need to - make a list of the things you notice different between your art and those you admire. Maybe your shadows are too black? Maybe your art lacks texture? Maybe your colors are too bright and don't blend well? THINK about those things and try to improve it in your next image.

So. Those are my thoughts. Take from it what you will. :) (Smile)

Just needed to mention one more thing... these comments are related more to digital painting and freehand art. That tends to be my focus. I have a few photo manips, 3D images and other things that I'd like to feature but I don't consider myself an expert on those techniques in any way shape or form. I try to stick with what I know. :) (Smile)
