Dear friends,
In the animated atmosphere of gradually growing Vietnamese comics in the year 2009, I feel so surprised and hopeful about our comics in the future. The reason is that many young artists appear and show off their talents - That is everyone's long-awaited pride. Along with
GreenFarm, Manzin and the forthcoming
Truyện Tranh Việt Online, Vietnamese comics is believed to be better and move to a higher phase.
Therefore, in order to warm up the air as well as to creat an interesting and realistic activity for all young artists, basing on the idea of
Kaboom Ink on
DeviantART, =
Clap-san and I really hope to lauch a campaign:
Trans-Vietnam Artbook
I wish and believe that this artbook will be supported by all of you. Lets show to the international friends the joy and unity of our Vietnamese-comics community! ^_^

And man, I LOVE sketches. I'm always so impressed by a person that can bring life to a boring sheet of paper in a few subtle strokes. That takes some skill.

Things I look for (not all of these things at once, just have at least one or two):
1. Well-developed anatomy
2. Good range of values
3. Solid linework
4. Nice use of color (or lack thereof)
5. Creativity/originality
6. Effort
Things that turn me off from selecting an image:
1. Small image size, bad compression, bad scan
2. Jagged, uncontrolled linework
3. Obviously smudged photographs
4. Poor use of filters, or overuse of the dodge/burn tools
Suggestions from me if you want to make a "feature":
1. Spend time on your piece. If you scribbled something into your notebook during mathclass with little care, then its probably not the best you can do. Put forth some extra effort and clean up those pieces, redraw them or just paint something new. The time you put into a piece of art really shows through, I promise.
2. Make the background of your piece in the same or similar style of your foreground. It looks odd to see a picture sketched onto notebook paper, scanned in and then placed on top of a photograph.
3. Look at someone else's art that you love. Look at it and really study it. What makes it look good to you? Look at your own work. Where is yours lacking? If you need to - make a list of the things you notice different between your art and those you admire. Maybe your shadows are too black? Maybe your art lacks texture? Maybe your colors are too bright and don't blend well? THINK about those things and try to improve it in your next image.
So. Those are my thoughts. Take from it what you will.
