Artisans and Functional Art - June 2009

`Kitten-of-Woe:iconKitten-of-Woe: reports, July 8

:star: Featuring Fine Workmanship by Artisans :star:

This is the fifth in this series that features art by members of the Artisan Crafts gallery that I feature daily in one of my journal modules. I add one each day and each is featured for 24-48 hours and then all are featured at the beginning of the next month as a group. These artisan works are found through my casual browsing and they could be very recently uploaded or they could be older works. They could have been made by very well-known artisans, by someone still unknown, or by someone very new to dA. They are random finds, so one gallery might be represented more than another and one artist might get featured more than once in the same month. My picks are totally random finds and that which struck me as something wonderful... I hope you think so, too, and that you enjoy this new series!

flying eagle pic 2 of 5 and flying eagle pic 1 of 5 by ~0----me----0 (Metalwork)
The first is a close-up of the second, which got a DD in April and was in the Mall Galleries in London from June 2-6 and entered into the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year competition and exhibition. To see it in fullview is a wonderful surprise to be able to see what must have been a lot of welding work and it's all so intricately done.

Scheherazade bracelet and art nouveau pendant by *szilviabead (Jewelry)
The first thumb is a bracelet of repeated elements of connectors alternating with densely wrapped silver wire forming an intricate geometric shape, which must have been far from easy to keep each one uniform in size and appearance. The second thumb is a quite long pendant measuring 11cm (about 4 3/8") and worked similarly to the bracelet, very precise and meticulous. The stones in the bracelet are quartz and aventurine, quartz, and glass are in the pendant.

Asian Turkey Burgers + Noodles by `feetpeet (Culinary Arts)
A pasta dish with ground turkey and I am sure that grilling the turkey as it specifies in the recipe (in the artist's comments) must surely add a wonderful dimension because who doesn't love grilled meat? Adding further depth to the dish are the Asian spices, including hoisin sauce and 5-spice powder.

Bellflower with gemstones and Bellflower- amethyst by *gemheaven (Jewelry)
Two different flowers made using basically the same technique, which was that sterling silver sheet was formed into a "bell" shape with little gemstone "blossoms" clustered underneath. Gemstones in the first thumb are a large blue chalcedony briolette, rubies, and peridot. Gems in the second thumb are amethyst, prehnite, and vesuvianite (aka californite). All are faceted and there are also hand-formed sterling silver "stamens" in each flower pendant.

Faelish by ~versarnwen (Leatherwork)
A very small leather book bound in the German springback style (a type of binding that makes it so the book will lie flat) and decorated with several stones. In goatskin and about 6cm x 6cm x 2.5cm (2 3/8" x 2 3/8" x 1").

"Guimard Gate" installed by ~ou8nrtist2 (Metal Work)
The people who commissioned this gate call it the "Guimard Gate" after the architect Hector Guimard, but ~ou8nrtist2 actually got his inspiration from the works of Belgian architect Victor Horta, noted for being perhaps the one who started the Art Nouveau movement in architecture. ~ou8nrtist2's fine gate here needs to be seen in fullview, it would be criminal not to!

Audrey Hepburn in Wire by ~reynaldomolinawire (Metalwork)
Unmistakably, undeniably Holly Golightly.

Elven Faerie and Elven Faerie, Pan by *GossamerGlen (Sculpture > Fantasy)
Two close-ups of sculpted elven dolls. The first one is the first male doll this artist ever made and both are soft sculpt posable bodies with sculpted heads, necks, breastplates, arms and legs. You can see the fullview of the first one here and the second one here.

Steampunk Set PREVIEW and Tools+Techniques: Seam Guide by `taeliac (Clothing and Resources & Stock Images > Video Resources & Tutorials)
Not something you see everyday, which is a twist on a laced bodice that has tails. Complete with skirt and crop jacket with puffed sleeves. In the video tutorial, Sam discusses an inexpensive, nifty little tool that helps you stay within the seam allowance while sewing -- the magnetic seam guide, which attaches to the metal throat plate of your sewing machine and helps you to stitch around curves and complicated seam lines. Made by Dritz® and available online and at most sewing stores. Not to be used with computerized sewing machines.

Arwen Chase Buckle by ~LordIronwulf (Jewelry)
A very faithful replica of Arwen's buckle that she wore on her Chase outfit at the bottom of the lacing in front. Cast in pewter with gold lacquer used for the highlights.

Blue Bat dress by *BellZ (Clothing)
A dress with bat-wing or "dolman" sleeves with the sleeves very wide at the armhole and narrow at the wrist, sometimes cut in one with the bodice as has been done here.

little ball can and little ball can - open by ~LianDoArts (Metal Work)
A little hinged piece in silver, etched and then oxidized, 3.5cm (1 3/8") diameter.

stained glass mosaic flowers by ~reflectionsshattered (Sculpture & Glass)
A window in stained glass and done as a mosaic.

Time Machine by ~WearableByDesign (Jewelry)
A 1 1/2" (3.8cm) pendant with Victorian flair, hand-carved in PMC, reversible and with a cubic zirconia on each side. Featured in Art Jewelry Magazine.

The Cloisters Tapestry Unicorn by ~Tamizery (Custom Dolls)
A very endearing replica of "The Unicorn in Captivity" from the medieval "Hunt of the Unicorn" tapestries. I love the faithful attention to detail here from the curl of the tail to the fruit tree and the very exacting details of the lovely blue collar to the countless flowers in the base, just as it is in the background of each of the tapestries.

Brandon's Meowth and Brandon's White Wolfos by ~Skele-kitty (Folding & Papercraft)
This artist (along with other builders and designers, ~PaperBuff, ~P-M-F, ~z8-0, ~Jyxxie, and *Lyrin-83) not only made these papercraft models but is their designer and you can obtain the templates from her website.

camels by ~lorenzou (Metalwork)
Made completely from recycled parts!
