Wildlife Awareness: Frogs

#Wildlife-Awareness:iconWildlife-Awareness: reports, July 8
Frogs have been ruling the planet for millions of years! They lived out the dinosaurs and many other creatures that have become extinct. So why is it that now that frogs are becoming extinct? Over half of the frog population are now considered endangered!! Continue reading this article to find out why frogs are dying out and what you can do to stop the horrible decline!

Some Frog Facts
:bulletgreen: There are 5,576 Anurans(Frogs and Toads)species in the world.
:bulletgreen: The smallest frog ever recorded is the Eleutherodactylus from Cuba. It measured 10 mm(0.4in) They are considered endangered due to pesticides and habitat destruction.
:bulletgreen: The largest frog ever recorded is the Goliath Frog from Africa(Conraua Golitah). It can grow over a foot in length and weigh up to 6.6lbs!
:bulletgreen: Gastric Brooding Frogs could shut down their gastric juices so that they could raise their young in their stomachs! This frog could have been the answer to treat ulcers but unfortunately this frog died out during the 1980's.

Why Are Frogs Important?
:bulletgreen: Frogs are bio-indicators! They are the first to know changes in the environment. This can help us predict events so we can be prepared for them.
:bulletgreen: Help out with medicines and pharmaceutical needs. Maybe a cure for cancer!!
:bulletgreen: Important part of the food change. They eat those annoying bugs and they feed other animals like snakes and eagles...you get the picture.
:bulletgreen: And over all they're just cute!

What is Happening to the Frogs?
Currently a global disease is hitting the Frogs and other amphibians pretty hard. The disease is a fungus called Cytrid. The fungus travels though the water. It embeds itself in the frogs skin. The frog reacts to this as a sickness and it's immune system kicks in. The immune system thickens the frogs skin making so the frog can no longer breath through it's skin and the frog suffocates. Their is no real treatment to kill of this fungus only if you catch the frog and place it in fungicide...and even then it is not guaranteed that the frog will live. So you can see how serious this is.

On top of that there is the pet trade, food trade, deforestation, and pollution.
