WWW: Writing Efficient CSS

`BoffinbraiN:iconBoffinbraiN: reports, July 18
This document from Mozilla Development Center outlines rules for optimizing CSS files for use in the Mozilla UI.

With an understanding of the underlying system, you can rewrite journal CSS and Stylish styles to make them as fast as possible, while still looking the same.

I tell ya man, Firefox should totally overwrite IE in the future

tea? :tea:

When you sleep in the paws of a predator...
:iconboffinbrain:
Well, it already has, among those intelligent and adventurous enough to change from the norm. But sadly, once again, Firefox is getting very bloated and slow, and Chrome might take over for the non-developer types just because it's extremely fast and simple - not to mention the fact that everyone uses Google and YouTube where Chrome gets a great deal of exposure.
:iconthespook:
Generally if it involves writing less, and keeping things simple, you end up 'accidentally' going the efficient route. :)

Anyhow, on dA we're stuck with classes and no advanced selectors, and when writing user stylesheets we're often forced to use expensive selectors ...so I'm not sure how practical the advice is for most people.
:iconboffinbrain:
Yes, just adding class names and not tag names can be shorter and easier to read, and now I know it's quicker too!

I know writing user styles it's often deemed necessary to increase selector weighting by adding extra tags, but since !important overrides that, and user-side important declarations are strongest of all, it's probably not needed that often other than when you need to make exceptions.

As for advanced selectors, as long as they're kept short and the descendant is used as often as possible, it needn't be expensive. The more specific the key selector, the better, so Firefox can stop checking before even having to check any other requirements i.e. checking on .class1.class2 instead of just .class1

:iconmeririm:
Thanks for sharing, useful article. It hurts to realize that my code is even more dreadful than I thought. XD
:iconblacktoweroftime:
Anyhow I need to thank you about this and that you used it in your new dA-Tidy ..it speeds up dA pageload a lot compared with the original dA CSS and JS. Also it seems that some JS temporary deadlocks or something pushing the FF cpu usage up to the max seems to be gone after using deviantTIDY ;-)
Also I need to read the Mozilla Document as I like to do some "tidy" for the Amazon.com , .de Webpages as well get that dam GreaseMonky script for export the Amazon Wish-list to a CSV file.
Could you maybe update your Post with an addition of a link that points to the recommendation document at mozilla? this may be usefull for readers so they no need to search for it .

Do you know what kind of art I do?

:iconpyritie:
Heck, despite that a lot of people still think Google is a browser. And the ones that do know what a browser is all use IE.

I know that google put little ads up on YT and on search but I guess people are just so used to ignoring ads these days that they must not've gotten very far.

Firefox doesn't have a big company behind it. Chrome does. Dunno wht google doesn't advertise on TV or in newspapers or whatever. At least they could run a small number of ads and see how much of an effect it makes. :hmm:

Yeah, I find Firefox to be quite slow on my netbook, but Opera is blazingly fast...
