As you probably know, deviantART’s birthday is coming up in two weeks! I’ve been thinking about something I could do as a birthday present for this wonderful community that has given so much to artists all around the world… and I think I’ve finally found something worthy.

There’s software out there that can render photo mosaics [link] based on images supplied by the user; and I think it’ll be a great gift for dA (the staff, the moderators, the MN@’s, and the community as a whole) if I made a mosaic using the great art found on this site.

However, to do this I’m going to need some community help to get the images in time for the birthday:

I’d like a mosaic big enough that you could actually print it, should you wish to do so; for an image this size, I need around 7,000 images .

I’m also going to need permission from the artists to use the images for this project.

So I ask you to help me get this project done in time.
If you’d like to participate in the project, please note me links to your deviations. The subject doesn’t matter, as long as they’re still images; images from any gallery are welcome; the more diversity, the better we’ll be showcasing the massive amount of creativity that exists in this community. It doesn’t matter if you’re a $Staff member or a deviant who joined today, you’re welcome to get involved .

Many of us come here for inspiration, for the showcase of wonderful pieces, to network with other artists, to make friends, for resources, for teh lulz, to share our work, to see what are the latest trends in art… some have even found life advise and support when going trough harsh times.

I know that for me dA and its community has become very meaningful, and I know that for many of you it’s the same; it’s a place where no matter where you come from, who you are or how you think you’ll find a group of people who share the same mentality, where you can meet awesome people who have the same passion for art as you, and the same desire to get it out there and improve their work. So I think it’s time to show deviantART how much we’ve done here.

IMPORTANT SHENANIGANS:

You can send your images starting NOW and until August 3rd, 2009. Images sent after that date can’t be guaranteed to appear in the mosaic.

Spread the word around: link this to your friends, watchers, make journals about it, talk of it on the forums and the chats… the point is to get as most of the community involved as possible

You’re welcome to send more than 1 image, however, depending on the amount of images received I might only use one of them.

I’d like some of the core staff and the moderators to supply images too. I’ll be noting some of them with requests to use their art for the project, however, I know they’re busy and might not reply in time. So, if you’re a staff member or a GM; please send some links to me .

Also, if you have any staff members or GM’s on your speed dial , could you request them to take 5 minutes and send me some images?

Emotes and avatars are welcome in one frame mode (i.e. no animation)… this is to be able to get the colour rendering done properly.

In order to avoid any post-project copyright issues, I ask you to copy/paste this text in the note where you link me the image:

Jucali, you have my permission to use the following image(s) for the 2009 deviantART birthday project; and I certify the I am the owner of the copyrights to such image(s).

If I get an amazing response from the community and the amount of images received surpasses the amount needed, I will do one of two things:
1. Use only the images necessary, and notify the community that no more images will be added OR
2. Make a bigger or second mosaic, depending on the amount of extra images received.
