ShellWM - Free, Open Source Window Skinning

!e-sushi:icone-sushi: reports, December 18, 2002
ShellWM is based on the sourcecode of CustomEyes v0.30 by Didier Abderrahmane. The original CustomEyes site is located here ShellWM is a windows skinning application to be used with a Win32 Shell replacement (like Litestep, geOshell, sharpE, etc.)

The idea comes from blueboxWM - since it will be limited to bluebox only, and since we've always wanted to be able to skin windows with an opensource software... when we found the sources of CustomEyes we immediately started this project: a Windows skin application dedicated to all the win32 shell replacement apps. Free of charge. Open source to be enhanced by anyone, revived by a core development team that's still working hard to make this thingy perfect.

Meanwhile, the project has been released under the GNU GPL v2 and it's sourcecode can be found at the SourceForge CVS: Compliant to the license. The license can be found in the single distribution packs we provide.

The app. skins section, ShellWM, has been created. It will not be browseable until there are submissions made to it! ShellWM can be found at different locations... the links here are those that are the most important for you to know:

:bulletgreen:alphals.shellscape.org/shellwm - The official information page. If you're looking for the latest ShellWM release, download it here! By the way: this is also the place to upload and download your ShellWM skins.

:bulletgreen:e-sushi.shellscape.org - Just in case anything goes wrong with the url above, or in case you need an alternate download page for the latest ShellWM binary... there's always a copy of the latest binary hosted here!

:bulletgreen:sourceforge.net/projects/shellwm - The official open source project page at sourceforge. This is the url that hosts our CVS.

wowie... looks promising to me, hope they keep up the good work and hopefully there will be a version 1.0 soon ;) (Wink)
Until then i'll stick with WindowBlinds... but WB has to watch out, it might get kicked from my machine :D (Big Grin)

I don't see how this could compare with WB... it's a completely different approach to skinning, and it only works in conjunction with other available shell replacements. So, my point is, if you're already using a windows shell replacement, there'd be no point in removing WB because WB would be useless. Heh, hope that made sense.

Huh? it only works in conjuction with other shell replacements?
Hope I got that wrong. This is a standalone application!

On the other hand you're right... windowblinds is a complete system skinning tool, while we're cutting the overload out of ShellWM. Therefore, you are right... it can't really be compared. ;) (Wink)

Oh, before I post this: please be aware that this is a first preview/beta release with some bugs we know about and some we don't. We're working hard to reach a much more stable release soon with the major bugs fixed (eg - explorer/IE title text problem sometimes showing only one letter). Most bugs were in Didiers source. I guess that's why he released it to public. We took it, killed out the worst stuff, fixed the obvious and started digging in deeper. Currently we're 4 active DevTeam members working 6 days a week, around 5 hours a day on the project, but there's loads to do and fix... so if anyone would like to join us because he or she thinks he or she can contribute... just go ahead and mail us, we'll be more than happy to hear from you!

~e-sushi, I got that bit from your website which states: "ShellWM is a windows skinning application to be used with a Win32 Shell replacement (like Litestep, geOshell, sharpE, etc.)" Maybe I misinterpreted it, if so, how should it be interpreted? :) (Smile)
