Project Manip Mentor

*InertiaK:iconInertiaK: reports, March 5
Are you new to creating Art, specifically photo-manipulation? Have you ever questioned how someone did something and been truly inspired to learn? Have some tutorials left you more confused, or not given you all you desired? Or are you a person who has gained much from the DA community and grown into a wonderful artist with knowledge to share?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions, then please read further.

I've been blessed to be apart of the DA community for years, reading tutorials, receiving feedback though learning most things on my own as do so many other Artists.. Over time, we all expand in some form (and not just weight!) as we get older. However, like anything, some times it does help to have that extra push, words of encouragement or the know how on how to improve.

Manip Mentor is a Group that I have founded in the hopes of starting a Mentoring program for aspiring artists on DA who are looking to improve in some fashion, or are just starting out and are completely confused (and haven't we ALL been there?). The goal of Manip Mentor is to bring people together, those with some skill and those with minimal skills who are wanting to learn more.

The concept would ideally put One Mentor with three to five "students", and for a one month period those students will be given projects / themed artwork by that Mentor to create to follow up with extensive critique, Do-overs, mini tutorials and more in order to give examples of how the image could be improved. After one month, the session is complete and new students are taken on and the cycle begins again. Students who have “graduated” will then become Contributors and will be able to post one piece of art, per month to the Gallery to reflect improvements over time.

The Group is currently in beta (meaning I'm working on it!) but I'd like to get the word out there that both Mentors and students would be wonderful and are needed to make this work. It would mean some extra devotion of time on both parties, but the sheer satisfaction of helping out another along with it.

If you are interested in being a Mentor, please contact me / note me. The number of students / members accepted into the Group will depend on the number of Mentors we have, AND how many students they can take. Ideally I would love to get something going by the middle of the month.

While Manip Mentor is focused on Photo Manipulation and Digital Mixed Media, it could also be expanded into other groups and genres across DA. If you are interested in making your own Mentor Group, please let me know and we can set up an affiliation.

Due to the nature of the Club, Membership will of course be limited to what the Mentor’s can handle that month, however your application will be placed upon the waiting list and provided the Mentors have availability for the following sessions, you will then be placed accordingly.

This Group will have some rigid rules that need to be followed in order to make it work. If you are not prepared to do so, then please understand the group isn’t for you. It isn’t about popularity, there are plenty groups that can provide that! xD

For further information please visit :iconmanip-mentor: and read the articles in the blog.

Bare in mind the Group has just been initiated and is still very much in the start up stage.

(And this is my FIRST ever news article in the bazillion years I’ve been here, so if I did something wrong, I’m sorry! I need a “news” mentor!) J

We are willing to help WWF's Save Sumatra program, and local agencies to protect the species. We'll also be recording forest elephants and clouded leopards on forest trails while in central Sumatra, to cite just a few of the amazing species we are aiming to record.

World AIDS Day 2009 - Charity Art Project

=druideye:icondruideye: reports, September 23, 2009
WORLD AIDS DAY 2009 Project

World AIDS Day 2009 will be held December 1, 2009. The theme this year is "Universal Access and Human Rights".

From the AVERT web site:

Started on 1st December 1988, World AIDS Day is about raising money, increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education. The World AIDS Day theme for 2009 is 'Universal Access and Human Rights'. World AIDS Day is important in reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done.

According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 33.2 million people living with HIV, including 2.5 million children. During 2007 some 2.5 million people became newly infected with the virus. Around half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are 25 and are killed by AIDS before they are 35.

Around 95% of people with HIV and AIDS live in developing nations. But HIV today is a threat to men, women and children on all continents around the world.

-------------

I invite you to take part in a project that I am hosting in honor of World AIDS Day 2009. Why am I hosting this? It is near and dear to my heart.

My uncle was told he was HIV+ in 1990, and lived for 6 years after being told this. He died in June 1996, two months after my wedding. He had attended my wedding but was very sick, and two months later almost to the day he walked himself into a hospital, and never walked out. I didn't get to see him before he died, my wedding was the last time I saw him alive. I can't even begin to tell you how much my uncle meant to me, he was an ever present part of my life since I was a child, and it devastated me to lose him to AIDS. Of course officially they wrote he died of pneumonia, and listed AIDS second or third on the death certificate, but AIDS is what killed this very good and beautiful man.

This is a photo taken of me and my uncle at my wedding, the last time I saw him alive.

I have always been too broken up about losing him to do anything in his memory publicly, though I did name my first son after him in memory. I've lost friends because I have had someone die of AIDS in my family. People thought I should keep it quiet. But I am a stronger woman today than I've ever been and it is time for me to lend my support to AIDS research to help someone else's beloved uncle, or anyone else, to find the cure for this killer disease.

The above quote from AVERT says 95% of people with AIDS live in developing nations, but this was not a fact in the 90's and I know many that died of AIDS including my beloved uncle. I do this in his memory, RIP Jimmy Ray McClure Jones.

THE PROJECT - AIDS Charity Book

I have been a member of deviantART for over five years and I am constantly overwhelmed by the amount of talent on this site. It is heartwarming and challenges me each and every day to be better. What I would like to do is to ask you, the amazing artists of dA, to submit whatever you do best - whether it be traditional art, digital art, photography, photomanipulation, prose or poetry - and let me compile a charity book whose proceeds will go directly to AVERT, an international AIDS charity (find them here: [link]). Depending on how many participate, I will choose the submissions to be included in the book.

Your piece of art (and yes I consider literature to be art as well) should follow the theme of World AIDS Day - or be somehow related to AIDS. Red ribbons are beautiful things. Your creativity is a must, whether it is simple or more involved.

Do a search for AIDS on dA and you'll find a lot of inspiration: [link]

Here's a few to inspire you:

Project Guidelines

:bulletred: Start Date: October 1, 2009
:bulletred: End Date: December 1, 2009 - World AIDS Day
:bulletred: Art must be about in some way, shape or form AIDS
:bulletred: Mediums that will be accepted include traditional art, digital art, photography, photomanipulation and short literature
:bulletred: Send thumbs to =druideye in a note to be collected
:bulletred: Label note "AIDS Submission" IMPORTANT
:bulletred: No limit on submissions
:bulletred: Entry does not have to be new, but new art is encouraged
:bulletred: I will choose which submissions will be included in the full color book
:bulletred: Everyone will be given the opportunity to purchase the full color book whose proceeds will go to AVERT, an international AIDS charity. I will not take ANY proceeds for myself for hosting and putting this together.
:bulletred: I will keep an up to date list on my journals of how much is being donated to AVERT.
- I will be having a contest for the front cover of the book, the winner will receive a free copy of the book.

If you have any questions or would like to contact me, feel free to do so at =druideye.

THANK YOU for taking the time to read my story and about this project, and please take a little more time to make an entry (or seven!) and submit. I also would LOVE LOVE LOVE  for you to advertise this project in your journals and in your clubs and communities.

There is actually a cure for AIDS already discovered, we just haven't discovered how to make it available to the public.

--

:iconcelithralia:
Actually, there are reports of potential cures for the HIV virus itself, which in time can cause AIDS, though until such treatments are made available to the public, one can only chalk it up to speculation. Once one has contracted AIDS, as of yet, there is no cure. If you are referring to the case of AIDS being cured via bone marrow transplant, there isn't enough evidence backing it up, to say it is true. The man was actually undergoing treatment for leukemia, who also had AIDS, and has been healthy now, for some 20 months or more, however, only time will tell. It could be the treatment simply allowed his condition to become dormant or it could be a one time fluke. Additionally, it may be, that he actually had HIV, but not AIDS yet. If this is the case, and they have a cure for HIV, brilliant, but this still will not help those, who already have full blown AIDS. Additional research needs to be done, and trials need to be started to verify bone marrow transplant as a viable treatment. Something slightly off topic, Scientists have recently announced, the possibility of using the HIV virus in gene therapy, to deliver healthy genetic code to folks suffering from various conditions (by first stripping out the part of the virus that would cause HIV). A team led by Dr. Patrick Aubourg of the University of Paris-Descartes are working on a treatment for ALD (adrenoleukodystrohpy).

:iconbekamonster:
The line between HIV and AIDS is just a notch on a meter. When treating the cause of AIDS, yes this would seem ineffective at helping those with "full blown" AIDS, but treating HIV is NOT treating the cause, it is in fact treating the condition. The "cure" I'm talking about is not speculation, it has been used numerous times to treat numerous test subject and all have actually made a full and complete recovery. The reason that it isn't available to the public is that it is the kind of cure that needs to be tailored to the individual, and currently this costs alot of money, and alot of time. Hopefully soon we will find a common treatment that works for everyone, and can mass produce it.
