$lolly's DVD Review...Crank!

lolly:iconlolly: reports, March 5, 2007
Crank. A perfect name for one of the most unadulteratedly fun movies I have seen this year. The plot is fairly simple at face value. Chev (Jason Statham) is a hit man. A bad, bad violent studly old hit man. He awakes to find he has been dosed with a drug that will kill him within an hour unless he keeps his adrenaline up.

Rationalizing Irrational Fears

*YamiChi:iconYamiChi: reports, October 18
Fear is a strange emotion. Fear is often completely irrational but is also a mechanism to save us from danger. When we are scared we want to hide away but our senses are stronger than ever. The range of what we fear also varies considerably.

In a recent poll, I found the thing people feared the most was human nature. Humans are capable of monstrous and evil things and this is something no one can doubt. Why is it then that we can still be scared of fictional monsters, the things that go bump in the night? When I thought about this I realised it is because these fears in the supernatural all have basis in the natural, in the things we really should fear.

Helped along by some amazing pieces of art, I had a closer look at some of these categories.

Monsters

For most this is a fear that fades as we leave childhood but they still remain a staple of the horror genre. Books have been made about monsters for hundreds of years and play on the same basic fear; monsters can physically hurt you. Dracula bites, Frankenstein’s Monster strangles, the Werewolf spreads it’s infection as it feeds and Zombies feed on our flesh. If it’s hiding under the bed, it’s because it’s waiting for you to put a tentative foot out of bed. There are even monsters bred from animals that really exist. Jaws gave the Great White a very bad name and Lake Placid did nothing for crocodiles. It is a monsters physicality that terrifies, their ability to destroy the body.

Ghosts and Spirits

Not all ghosts, if you believe in such things, are malevolent. Still if a ghost were to casually walk through the room minding it’s own business you would still jump through the roof. As much as monsters can kill, they can just as easily be killed. Ghosts have no physical presence so ridding oneself of them is not as straightforward. They also make you think of your own mortality; perhaps also the same reason we are so quick to fear graveyards and churches at night. There are many kinds of ghost but perhaps the most well known is the poltergeist. Capable of having physical effect they are better known for appearing in the lives of teenage girls. However, Carol-Ann speaking to her parents through the white noise of a TV makes for a far more interesting film than a moody teenager yelling at her mother through a door. Right?

Childhood Treasures

At what age did that clown you’ve had since you were a baby go from being a delight to a demon? I hated sleeping over at my friends house for her bedroom was adorned with Porcelain Dolls. Would you go round a fairground at night? Children and childhood are often terrifying for the very irony of the idea. It is innocence lost, it is growing up too fast, it is losing those years we are scared of fictional things like monsters and not the reality of life. Clowns especially are normal people, but once that mask is put on we don’t really know whom they are and what they might do. Did any of you cry when you were sat on Father Christmases lap? Exactly.

Slashers and Curses
Unless you are very lucky, chances are you have worried over an action you have taken or a way you acted in a situation. You were especially concerned that day you upset the old woman dressed in black with the glass eye and staff. Curses are an attack personally on you and generally it is only you who can break it. Friends may be there to support you but only you can save the day. Hefty responsibility.
Maniacs with meat cleavers are quite the opposite. Generally you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time and how are you meant to know when that is (unless you have sex in an empty house belonging to a stranger, that’s your own fault). The maniac is the most human of the monsters and thus should be the most believable. Perhaps it is just me, but the original Michael Myers and his average human size was a far scarier being than the 7ft brick s*** house of the Rob Zombie remake. Why? Who are you more likely to see on the street?

Perhaps of course the strangest thing about fear is we just love being scared. We watch, read and listen to things intended to frighten us. Why do we go out of our way to cause or hunt down frights? Because the real world is the scariest thing of all.

Disclaimer: This is all just a bit of fun. I do not pretent to understand the human mind on any psychological level.

I agree with most of this, not that I know anything about the human psyche. Have you seen the movie Penny Dreadful? It kind of goes along these lines. I rather liked it, although I did watch it after midnight all by myself around Halloween, so maybe it wasn't really a good scary movie. (I know nothing of horror/suspense. I don't watch it.)
