Weekly Art School Review #3

~maxpower:iconmaxpower: reports, April 7, 2003
As I continue to write summaries of art schools for your knowledge, I now come to the Corcoran College of Art and Design. Read on to find out about Washington D.C.'s finest art school.

The Corcoran College of Art and Design is widely known as a leading school for developing artists and designers in the United States. Tuition for the school is roughly around $18,000 per year, and the school offers associate, bachelor, and graduate studies. The tuition process is similar to most other art schools, and applications are admitted on a rolling basis. The two most important considerations of the Committee on Admissions are:

:bulletgreen: First, the applicant’s artistic potential, as demonstrated through the presentation of a portfolio of art and/or design work and through grades achieved in studio art classes; and

:bulletgreen: Second, the applicant’s ability to succeed in a scholastic environment, as measured by the applicant’s academic records. Standardized test scores are also reviewed and evaluated as part of the academic record.

Personal qualities and achievements are taken into consideration when documented through letters of recommendation from counselors and teachers, listings of extracurricular activities and other similar forms of information. Applicants may submit an optional short essay or personal statement describing their interests, activities and educational goals.

First Year students are required to participate in the 'Foundational Year', which lays the basic groundwork for your area of study. Students begin their major work in their sophomore year.

In all, I would highly recommend all serious art students to check out Corcoran as it provides a top-quality education for less money than many of the other prestigious art schools in the United States.

The Cocoran is incredible. I live in the D.C. area, and I visit the Smithsonian, the Corcoran, the National Gallery, the Hirshorn museum, the Freer, the list goes on...

BTW, this whole series of reviews was a great idea. Hats off to you :) (Smile)

I graduated from the corcoran last year, id be open to answer questions.. i spent my four years there, majored in graphic design.. i hear they are changing the gd curriculum majorly this year. the curriculum i graduated around was geared more to traditional design as opposed to digital, alot of it was still done by hand. The staff is probably the best thing about the school id say. Hats off to them, all of them seemed like they really enjoyed being there rather than having staff that was just there because it was their job. I personally think the school is more geared to the fine art/photo majors though.. the graphic design campus is stuffed away in georgetown, away from the main school in downtown washington dc and money never seemed to make it over to that campus.. (low ink cartridges, no paper, etc etc). Senior Fine art majors also have the perks of having the museum host your own show for a week or whatever, graphic design does get their show but as a class rather than an individual. Overall though I found it to be a good experience but I dont see why they need to bump up tuition every year when nothing seems dramatically better.
