I wouldn't consider myself a pro at making Fan characters _{No really, I'm far from it...} but many deviants have commented my work and put down their own characters. So, here are some guides and tips on making a fan character, in some tips labelled below.

Though not really respected here on DA because of a lack of effort. Though some people may think they have put tonnes of effort into a character, others think there's more to be done. But even then, many deviants haven't taken into account that we all started the same. My first ever character was a green Shadow named Reflecto. But it's not too late to change it! Just take a pencil and paper and read on for tips to improve.

Backstory and personality
What must I avoid, if anything
Avoid making your storyline anything to do with the OC's. Some cases, Brothers and Sisters or Relatives are acceptable, but if your character's species is nothing to do with the character (For example Sonic the Hedgehog having a Cat sister) then it doesn't really look right.
Don't make your character's storyline too much like an OC's. Everyone loves to read something new, so if you think deeply about it you might just get the bull’s eye on what people like.
What kind of personality should my character have
It's totally up to you. This is your character, so it's entirely yours to construct. You can make it just like you, or the total opposite!

Species and Powers
What should I avoid, if anything
Species isn't really a big deal, but I find the best characters are a species that Sonic Team hasn't covered. Explore Wikipedia, Google, or other search engines for an animal you like, you might be surprised what you can find.
What about powers
In the Sonic Universe, Sonic is the fastest thing alive. So if your character is a resident in Sonic's world, being faster then him would contradict his reputation. On the other hand, say your character is from another world (Blaze's dimension, far past or future, Twilight Cage etc) These powers would be acceptable.
Powers like Pyrokenisis, Telekinesis, are often based upon Backstory, or species. For example, Blizzard the Penguin can swim with great speeds. Tide the Turtle can control limited amounts of water. Best results are always related to the species.
Does my character HAVE to have powers
No. Some characters are totally amazing without powers, but may look not so good with them. Instead of powers, you may want to equip your character with a basic weapon, such as a gun, staff, wrench etc.
Can I make up a species, like an alien or something
Totally! If you've already come up with a design but can't class it as anything, make it up! Help for naming your species is below too.

Name
Names are just as hard to think of as the character itself sometimes. I usually base mine on the character's species or powers or personality, like Blizzard the Penguin and Sail the Spinosaur. If you have a name which you're not too keen on, translate it into a different language. Such as Green the lizard >>> Vert the Lizard. It's that simple!
Species names, look at your character. What's the first animal (If any) that comes into your mind when you look at it? And the second? You can pair the names of these animals together to make your own species, or mix and match with translators. Like dog cat >>>> Catog >>>> Nechat. French and Russian spellings there.

Anything else?
